Historical Evolution
Kinmen Daily News began as the Zhengqi Zhonghua Newspaper, which itself originated from the Wuxie Newspaper first published by the 18th Army of the National Military in early 1948 in Suiping. After relocating to Xuyang, the paper was discontinued by the end of the year. In the spring of 1949, General Hu Lian, stationed in Nancheng, Jiangxi, renamed the Wuxie Newspaper to the Zhengqi Zhonghua Newspaper for use in education and training purposes. Due to the political turmoil of the time, the newspaper moved several times, eventually making its way to Kinmen and then to Taipei. On November 25 of the same year, the newspaper resumed publication in Kinmen, initially located at You Tang in Shuitou, then moving to Houpu three months later. On October 17, 1962, it settled in its current location in Chenggong Village.
Initially, the newspaper continued to be published under the name Zhengqi Zhonghua Newspaper, but as Kinmen Daily News was founded on October 31, 1965, the two newspapers were published concurrently. In May 1991, the computer typesetting system was introduced, and in September 1992, the Xinxun Building was completed and put into use. On November 7, 1992, the wartime administrative governance in Kinmen ended, and Kinmen Daily News was placed under the administration of the Kinmen County Government; Zhengqi Zhonghua Newspaper then transitioned to a weekly publication format under the Kinmen Defense Command. On July 1, 1999, the first and fourth pages of the newspaper officially switched to color print, and in October 2006, a four-color printing machine was introduced. On December 1 of the same year, the fifth and eighth pages also transitioned to color print.
With the rise of the internet, the newspaper established a website in 2001, which launched on January 27 that year, providing online news and marking a milestone in entering the information age. On May 4, 2016, the newspaper began offering free downloads of its electronic edition, entering a new era of full-page digital newspapers. On March 23, 2020, the newspaper launched "Real-Time News," providing the public with instant updates on major news events.
During the period when wartime administrative governance began in Kinmen, the need for printing local wine boxes, wine labels, and related materials, along with the goal of preventing population outflow and increasing employment opportunities, led the Wartime Administrative Committee to order the establishment of a color printing facility in 1976. The first batch of color-printed paper boxes was officially produced and delivered on March 21, 1977. To expand its services, the facility gradually added equipment for offset printing, label printing, hot stamping, and corrugated processing. However, due to the opening of Taiwan's free market and the resulting competition, the printing plant faced operational difficulties and eventually ceased external business operations, focusing solely on printing and publishing the newspaper.
