馬總統：感念金馬人60年的奉獻

On the morning of August 17, Provincial Governor, Xue, Cheng-Tai, led a group of 50 representatives from the Kinmen and Matsu Fellows Associations into the Office of the President, where they conversed (1) for nearly an hour with President Ma, Ying-jiu. President Ma expressed his gratitude for the sacrifice and devotion (2) shown by the residents of Kinmen and Matsu over the past 60 years. Since his inauguration, President Ma has worked to improve cross-strait relations. Seeing improvement towards a harmonious atmosphere across straits, he believes that Kinmen and Matsu will continue to have better prospects (3). President Ma also hopes the National Quemoy University (NQU) will develop and strengthen its unique character, and the Kinmen Bridge, upon competition, will become a scenic landscape.
福建省政府主席薛承泰，17日上午率領旅台金馬同鄉會五十位代表走進總統府，與總統馬英九對話交流近一小時。馬英九對金馬人民過去六十年所作犧牲奉獻表示感念。他自上任以來即致力改善兩岸關係，如今見到兩岸和平氣氛越來越濃，相信金馬前景也會越來越好；他也期許金門大學發展出特色，金門大橋也能成為一座景觀之橋。

Kinmen and Mastu were primarily military outposts (4) under the War-zone Civil Administration (5) in the past 60 years. For the sake of Taiwan's prosperity and stability, the development in both Kinmen and Mastu were severely limited. President Ma expressed his heartfelt appreciation for the sacrifice made by residents of both islands, thus explaining the reason for the emphasis on Kinmen and Mastu's infrastructure after he took the presidential office. Take the upgrade of the NQU as an example, the Ministry of Education acted on behalf of (6) President Ma as the Minister announced in its establishment ceremony the "Teacher Expansion Plan," which would increase the number of teachers to 100 within five years. He went on to say that the construction of the Kinmen Bridge-the notorious (7) "Floating Bridge" used by many while campaigning-will begin at the end of this year.
金馬曾經是軍事前哨，實施戰地政務，過去六十年來為了安定台灣，發展嚴重受限，馬總統特別對金馬的犧牲、奉獻表達了感念之情。馬總統表示，正因為金馬的犧牲，從他上任後特別重視金馬建設。金門方面，大家看到金門大學已經掛牌成立，當天也特別透過教育部長宣布，將給予金門大學「教師倍增計畫」，五年內增加一百個名額；而過去國人皆知的「選舉浮橋」-金門大橋，已確定年底動工。

President Ma was deeply impressed by the spirit of overseas Kinmenese; he specifically named Yeoh, Tiong-Lay (楊忠禮), Teo, Woon-Tiong (張允中), and Tan, Seng-Leong (陳成龍), and acclaimed (8) these enterprisers for their concerns and contributions to the hometown. Ma, Ying-Jiu appealed to the people that with the devotion of Kinmen and Matsu for the sake of Taiwan's stability and security, all compatriots (9) should fight for the interests of Kinmen and Matsu.
馬總統對海外金門人的濃厚鄉情也留下深刻印象；他點名了南洋金門企業家楊忠禮、張允中、陳成龍等人，能夠心繫金門，回饋桑梓。馬英九也呼籲，金馬為了台灣的安定與安全而犧牲奉獻，希望大家一起來為金馬權益打拚。
