At least 51 people were killed by forest fires in central Chile and the death toll is expected to keep rising as unusually high temperatures and droughts fan blazes across South American, authorities said on Saturday, as emergency services battled to snuff out flames threatening urban areas. The responders had managed to control 40 of some 92 fires burning Saturday across the country. The area affected by the wildfires increased from 30,000 to 43,000 hectares, or more than 106,000 acres, said Interior Minister Carolina Toha earlier in the day.

The president decreed a curfew in the area to help free up routes for emergency vehicles and to allow people to evacuate. 　　It is believed to be Chile's deadliest forest fire on record. The housing ministry said between 3,000 and 6,000 houses were impacted by the fires. President Gabriel Boric has declared a state of emergency to combat the forest fires encroaching on coastal cities in the Valparaiso region in central Chile and said he would make "all necessary resources" available to tackle the situation.
