Camping in the Rain
Something strange and unbelievable happened to my classmates last weekend. Bob and Jerry were best friends. They planned to go camping with the scouts club. In the evening, they were sent into the forest to collect some sticks for the campfire. Unfortunately, it started to rain heavily, and they didn't have an umbrella. They ran quickly to a big, fancy, ancient house, hoping to borrow one. Jerry knocked on the door. "Excuse me, we are Boy Scouts from Jinning Junior High School. May we borrow an umbrella, please?" A friendly old man opened the door and welcomed them in. "Of course, my boys. You are all wet. Come in and have some tea and snacks. I will go get an umbrella for you." Jerry and Bob were very hungry, so they didn't want to miss a free treat. They walked inside and enjoyed a fancy tea time. After the big meal, they felt very sleepy. The friendly old man came in again to clean the table. "It's still raining outside. Instead of sleeping in a tent in the rain, why not stay here for the night? I'll rest on this sofa. You can sleep anywhere you like." Jerry and Bob looked at each other and smiled. How lucky they were! They were supposed to go back and meet their scout friends, but they just couldn't leave this warm, cozy place. They thanked the old man and happily stayed. They slept soundly all night and forgot they came just to borrow an umbrella. The next morning, a cold breeze woke Jerry and Bob up. The fire in the fireplace had gone out, and they saw that the window was broken. Was there a robbery last night? They went into the old man's bedroom to check on him, but they couldn't find him anywhere. Suddenly, they heard a noise by their feet - a rat ran by and hid under the sofa. They followed the rat and saw a skeleton on the sofa! Jerry and Bob were terrified. They ran out of the house, into the forest, and back to their camp. When they looked back, the big, fancy, ancient house had disappeared. They were still wet and starving in the rain.

What I Want to Be When I Grow Up 我長大後想做的工作
Have you ever dreamed about what you want to be when you grow up? When I grow up, I want to be a scientist. The main reason I want to be a scientist is because I want to discover different species that are non-human (humanoid) or alien-like creatures that might be out there in the universe, on other planets, or in galaxies, black holes, wormholes, and other mysterious places in space. Another reason I want to be a scientist is to explore new types of cells, such as bacteria, viruses, amoebas, and other microscopic organisms or diseases that could exist outside of Earth. The type of scientist I want to be is an astronomer. Astronomers usually use telescopes to discover planets beyond Earth and study them to see if they could support life or have new forms of life that go beyond our imagination. Some astronomers work with space agencies like NASA to plan space missions. If I were an astronomer, I would likely discover exoplanets, like J1407B. If you don't know what an exoplanet is, it's a planet that orbits a star outside of our solar system. J1407B is also known as "Super Saturn" because of its giant ring system. To become an astronomer, I will study science and math in school and learn more about planets and the universe. I will also explore the internet to learn more about other planets and potential new life forms. Reading books about space, watching space documentaries, participating in science fairs, and visiting planetariums could also help me achieve my goal of becoming an astronomer in the future. I really hope to achieve this dream one day. Don't you think it's exciting?

My Dream Trip to Australia
Hello! My name is Garles. I was born in Kinmen, and I study at Jincheng Junior High School. I am thirteen years old, and I enjoy learning different things. I learned to play the tuba when I was nine years old. Music makes me feel relaxed, and I forget about unhappy things when I play it. During the last summer vacation, many of my friends visited Australia. They shared that the trip was a lot of fun. They made many new friends, stayed with host families, and experienced the local culture. After hearing about their experiences, I hope to have the opportunity to participate in this program and visit Australia. I want to learn about the local culture, taste the local food, and observe the local animals, such as Tasmanian devils and wombats. I want to participate in an international exchange program because this activity will allow me to step out of Kinmen. The world is big and full of places worth discovering. I look forward to stepping out of my comfort zone, leaving my hometown, and discovering more beautiful things.

A Better Self
Talia, a junior high school student, had an overwhelming addiction to sweets. Every day, her meals consisted of sugary treats: bubble milk tea and doughnuts for breakfast, cakes and pudding for lunch, and ice cream with syrup for dinner. Her excessive consumption of desserts became a serious problem because she gained weight day by day. Most terribly, her poor dietary habits not only affected her appearance but also her health, as she didn't have balanced nutrition, which led to daily digestive problems. One day, she was determined to make a change. Talia made a comprehensive plan. She gradually replaced sugary foods with nutritious meals and committed herself to daily exercise. The process wasn't easy, but her perseverance paid off. As weeks turned into months, she noticed positive changes in both her physical appearance and overall well-being. Finally, Talia transformed herself into a healthier, more confident person. Her story serves as an inspiring reminder that with determination and proper habits, positive change is always possible. The key is to maintain a balanced diet and exercise regularly.

The Memories of Guningtou
At Guningtou's tranquil shore, Footprints once marched through storms and cannon fire, Etching stories of courage in the shifting sand, Where echoes of battle still linger. Gentle waves brush the beach, Like storytellers whispering tales of the past. There was a time when the sky turned gray, And thunderous shells shook the trembling earth. Young soldiers stood their ground, Hearts beating in unison with the fearful land, Yet their resolve never faltered, For they fought to shield their cherished home. An ancient banyan tree watched in silence, Witnessing fear, sacrifice, and sorrow. Now, beneath its sheltering shade, children laugh and play, And soft sunlight warms their hopeful smiles. Kinmen, in each grain of your soil, A legacy of heroism gleams, binding past to present. We stroll along your peaceful coast, free from war, Carrying memories of strength into tomorrow.

My English Learning Journey
In my class, I have some of the best English skills among my classmates. I often get excellent grades on exams, have great pronunciation, and when the English teacher asks me a question, I can answer it correctly. My classmates usually think that I study a lot for English or attend a cram school, or that I am just lucky enough to guess all the exam answers. I usually reply to them: No. My success with English started when I was very young. When I was four years old, my life revolved around English. Every video I watched wasn't a cartoon, but an English word-learning video or an English pop song. These videos had a great rhythm that attracted me, and I used them to learn many words and their pronunciation. There was also an alphabet chart on my room's door. After watching the learning videos, I always tried to read the words on the chart. I did this over and over again, and I became good at reading them and memorized them quickly. When I was an elementary school student, I did my best to get good grades and learn vocabulary and sentence structures, but I didn't think I had great English skills at all, and I didn't even use it for other things. Then, while I was searching for information about things I was interested in, I encountered a problem: I couldn't find the information I wanted. When I tried searching in English, I found it! I realized I could get more information and many other things by using English or other languages to search and find. I finally understood how useful English skills were. Now, I can use English to talk to people smoothly, pronounce words correctly, and get good grades on English exams. Additionally, I even gave a speech in front of everyone at school without making a mistake and was praised by the principal. Every time I want to search for more recipes to cook or more methods to improve something, I can use English to search and always find what I need. Having great English skills is very important and useful for me; it has helped me complete many tasks and enjoy a better life. You can also have great English skills like me-or even better-if you make English a part of your daily life. It might sound difficult, right? But I really did it when I was young! If you still think learning English is hard and time-consuming, why not use English to search for things you need but can't find in Chinese? You might find it if you try searching in English. Learning English properly and using it in real life will give you the best experience.

Fun in Mount Taiwu
Last time, I went to Mount Taiwu with my friends and my teacher. We went hiking, and I was very happy because I could play with my good friends and learn English from my teacher. When I was on the mountain, I was sweating a lot. I walked a long way to get there. There was a temple, which was very famous in Kinmen. It protected all the people in the area, and we saw it right in front of us. I was really happy this time. I also shared the story of Kinmen with my teacher and friends, and they were very interested in what I said. After walking for just three more minutes, we arrived at the temple. There was a cat, and it was so cute! We touched the cat, but then it ran away. After that, we had to go back. Before leaving, we took a picture in front of the big "毋忘在莒" stone. Hiking was really fun!

A Busy Day of a Middle School Student
This morning, I almost slept through my alarm and ended up rushing out of the house at 7:28 AM. I didn't even have time for breakfast, so I grabbed a piece of toast and dashed to school like one of those cartoon characters. Yesterday, I stayed up late finishing homework, and guess what? I was dead tired. During classes, I could barely keep my eyes open. Suddenly, the teacher dropped a pop quiz on us. A POP QUIZ! My brain was so exhausted that I couldn't even figure out how to answer the first question. By the end of the quiz, I knew I was doomed. After dragging myself through the rest of the morning, the clock finally hit 4:30 PM, and it was basketball club time! I needed this break more than anything. My best friend and I had a one-on-one match, and guess what? I won! It was such a close and exciting game that I almost forgot how bad my morning had been. By the end of it, I was starving, so I went to my favorite little restaurant and treated myself to a simple but delicious dinner at 6:30 PM. But my day wasn't over yet. At 7:30 PM, I had math tutoring for two whole hours at a cram school. It was tough, and I felt tired and lethargic. When I finally got home, I took a nice shower, finished my homework, and collapsed into bed. What a crazy, busy day! But at least it ended much better than it started.

Russia yesterday unleashed its largest wave of airstrikes on Ukraine in almost three months, launching around 120 missiles and 90 drones in a sweeping attack that killed at least seven people and caused “severe damage” to the power system, officials said. "These attacks again highlight Ukraine's need for additional air defense systems from our allies," said Maxim Timchenko, CEO of DTEK, Ukraine's largest private power company. unleash:(v.) 空襲 sweeping:(a.) 盟友 ────────────────── The strikes, which prompted numerous emergency power cuts, came at a time when the impending U.S. presidential election victory of former US president Donald Trump, who has pledged to end the war without saying how, has raised the prospect of a looming push for negotiations. DTEK said its energy thermal power plants were attacked and equipment was “severely damaged”, resulting in blackouts. Besides, the extent of the damage was hard to assess because the officials reveal little detailed information about the outcome of strikes and the state of the network after repeated Russian attacks on the power grid. The country's state-owned energy operator, Ukrenergo, said that it will enforce "restriction measures" for the whole of Ukraine on Monday. massive:(a.) 停電;斷電期間 用法解析:表示A事件導致B結果,可以使用A result in B或B result from A 來表示。 assess:(v.) 限制(尤指官方) ────────────────── "Peaceful cities, sleeping civilians" and "critical infrastructure" were targeted, said Andrii Sybiha, Ukraine's foreign minister.
The MOJ on Tuesday has withdrawn its proposal ofdraft amendments seeking to raise the financial penalties for offenses relating to illegal abortions following a fierce backlash from women's rights groups. The MOJ:(n.)法務部Taiwan's Ministry of Justice的頭字語縮寫 draft:(n.) offense:(n.) abortion:(n.) ────────────────── Under current legislation, Article 288 of the Criminal Code, "a pregnant woman who by taking drugs or by other means causes her abortion" --referring to a woman who aborts a fetus herself --shall be sentenced to jail for no more than six months or be fined up to NT$3,000 (US$94), although the punishment can be remitted if the abortion is done because of sickness or for averting danger to life. However, last week, the MOJ proposed raising the maximum fine for this offense to NT$80,000 --a more than 26-fold increase. Criminal Code:(n.) 倍數 ────────────────── Article 290 states that carrying out an abortion of a woman's fetus "for purpose of gain" merits imprisonment from six months to five years, and a fine of up to NT$15,000. If it results in aggravated injury, then the sentence ranges from one to seven years, and the prison sentence increases to 3 to 10 years when causing the death of the woman. The MOJ also proposed that the financial penalty in Article 290 would be raised from NT$15,000 to NT$500,000(nearly US$15,650). As for the offense of causing an abortion that results in "aggravated injury," the MOJ sought to raise the currently-stipulated penalty of NT$15,000 to NT$1,000,000, and the fine for causing an abortion that results in a woman's death to increase 133-fold from the current NT$15,000 to NT$2,000,000. Only the penalties are increased, the possible prison sentences are unchanged. 家中的 stipulated:(a.)規定的 ────────────────── Additionally, the MOJ also suggested completely removing Article 292, which stipulates the crime of a person who "publicly advertises a method or thing to be used for abortion or who offers the services of himself or another for abortion, " from the statute books, citing the fact that no one has been indicted for this crime in the past ten years. However, some women's rights groups, including Taiwan Women's Link and the Awakening Foundation, separately expressed their concerns that the MOJ's proposed changes to Articles 288, 290 and 292 of the penal code represented a "setback" for women's rights and accused the MOJ of failing to consider abolishing the crime of abortion in the criminal code, but instead only seeking to increase the fines. statute:(n.) 廢止;廢除 ────────────────── The MOJ had been touting its proposal as being aimed at "protecting the bodily autonomy of pregnant women and the right to life of fetuses" and stressing that it was in line with the requirements of the CEDAW. However, Taiwan Women's Link said on Friday that "the MOJ actually misinterpreted and violated the spirit of CEDAW" since the 2022 CEDAW National Report published in 2022 recommended decriminalizing abortion for pregnant girls and women. Owing to the debate around whether to retain, increase or abolish the penalties altogether, the MOJ said it decided to withdraw the proposals pending further deliberation. tout:(v.) 自主權 CEDAW:(n.)《聯合國消除對婦女一切形式歧視公約》United Nations Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women misinterpret:(v.)

Besides the basic rate, the council also established preferential rates for industries meeting specific reduction criteria: NT$50 per metric ton for Category A and NT$100 per metric ton for Category B. The fees, applied initially only to companies emitting more than 25,000 tones per year, are expected to be collected starting in 2026, based on actual emissions next year. the MOENV :(n.)the Ministry of Environment環境部 convene :(v.) 公制 preferential :(a.)優惠的 meet :(v.)符合 specific:(a.) 散發(光、雜訊、氣味或氣體) ────────────────── The council has met six times, examining global carbon pricing practices and assessing impacts on the CPI since its inception in March 2024. Estimates showed a carbon fee of NT$300 per metric ton would lead to a 0.12 percentage point drop in GDP. Based on the GDP last year, every 0.1 percentage point drop in GDP is equivalent to about NT$23.5 billion, the MOEA said, adding that some local companies are bracing for a negative impact from the upcoming charges on carbon emissions as they are facing higher preferential rates than their rivals, who are paying NT$64.7 per ton imposed in Japan and NT$5.7 per ton in South Korea.
An employee at a Taiwan First Bank branch in Taoyuan's Bade District is under investigation for allegedly embezzling NT$6.29 million (US$194,574) in cash, the bank and local police said. allegedly:(adv.)涉嫌地 embezzle:(v.)貪汙;侵吞;盜用;挪用錢款 ────────────────── A person with knowledge of the matter who wished to remain anonymous said that bank employees noticed that each bundle of cash was missing NT$2,000 to NT$3,000 while conducting an inventory on the cash in its vault on Friday. An audit had been requested after discovering a shortage of cash in reserves of Danan ranch, said Taiwan First Bank in a statement issued Saturday. anonymous:(a.) inventory:(n.) 儲藏量 ────────────────── A bank teller supervisor surnamed Lee at the branch has reportedly admitted to taking a few NT$1,000 bills from the bundles each time he conducted an inventory, accumulating NT$6.291 million in illicit gains. teller:(n.) He has a few friends. He has few friends. accumulate:(v.)累積 illicit:(a.) What is considered illicit today is commonplace tomorrow.「今天我們認為是違法的,明天可能就司空見慣了」。 gain:(n.)獲利;尤指經過一段時間逐漸取得的收益 ────────────────── Saturday, Liang Chung-ming, deputy chief of the Taoyuan Police Department's Bade Precinct said his precinct opened an investigation after the bank branch reported the alleged financial crime on Friday(Oct. 4).
