Shanhou Folk Culture Village
My recent exploration of the Shanhou Folk Culture Village to create a video documentary on the architectural details of its Minnan houses was truly magical! I chose this village over other places in Kinmen because its founders Mr. Wand and his son had traveled to Japan in Northeast Asia, rather than to Southeast Asia where most Kinmen merchants typically did. The village preserves 18 Minnan-style buildings, each filled to the brim with architectural secrets waiting to be uncovered. What makes Shanhou Folk Culture Village so unique is howevery detail of its Minnan architecture carries both beauty and meaning. The buildings follow a chessboard-style layout, with symmetrical courtyards and elegant swallowtail roofs that curve gracefully against the sky, symbolizing prosperity and upward success. White mortar bricks are arranged both diagonally and horizontally-together forming the phrase thriving descendants-while the red bricks, some accidentally burnt with black streaks resembling swallowtails, havebecame a distinctive feature. Defensive and spiritual wisdom are embedded in the designs: thick stone walls and low rooftops resist typhoons, while narrow side doors once helped protect families from pirate raids. In some cases, plates were embedded loosely in the walls so they would rattle if climbed upon, acting as an early warning system. Even the smallest details-like ledges under the eaves for birds, window pillars always set in odd numbers to represent yang energy, or ancestor and deity shrines placed at different heights to show hierarchy-speak volumes about the values of harmony, protection, and reverence. Every carving, every color, and every structural choice here reflects idioms, blessings, and symbolism, making the village not just a home for its past residents, but a living encyclopedia of Minnan culture.

What I Have Learned from My Failures
Failure is a part of life, and I have experienced it, too. My biggest failure has always been math. It feels like it has been with me since I was born. At first, I hoped I could be good at it. But when I failed, I felt sad because I didn't know how to fix it. I was worried that people around me would laugh at me. Every time I had a math test, I seemed to hear people laughing, even though no one was actually next to me. Now, as a teenager, I have a different perspective on my failures. Even though I struggle with math, I've learned that it doesn't mean the end of the world. Looking back, I now understand that failure is always teaching me something: focus on what you are good at, because every star shines when it finds its own sky.

Key
A key is a very useful tool. You can unlock doors with it. You can also lock things like jewelry so thieves can't take them away. A key looks simple, but it is very important. It is a piece of metal with a special shape. It has a part that you can hold. If you want to use a key, you must have a lock. A lock has a hole where you put the key in. You can turn it left or right to lock or unlock a door, a car, a suitcase, a mailbox, a motorcycle, and more. I can't imagine my life without keys. If there were no keys, no one would put locks on their houses, because nothing could open them, and thieves could come into our homes easily at any time.

If I Had One Day to Live
If I had only one day to live, I would spend it with my family and friends. They are very important to me because they make my life beautiful. On my last day, I would go to the beach, because a beautiful beach always makes me feel calm. I would also read books and enjoy some delicious food. One thing I have never done but always wanted to try is diving. I want to do this because I want to enjoy the beauty of the ocean and see many sea creatures. It is my dream. At the end of the day, I would feel sad, because there are still many things I want to do in the future. I would tell my friends, "Thank you for being my friends. I will remember you forever." I would also share my final thought with my family: "If I had one day to live, please donate all my money to those who need it." I want to help as much as I can. Then I would say goodbye to the world and hope it will stay as beautiful as it is.

Exploring Taiwan Through Foreign Eyes
During my recent project to create a video documenting opinions about Taiwan, I had the opportunity to interview 100 foreigners visiting the island. I also stopped by the iconic Taipei 101 to showcase the beauty and vibrancy of the city. The interviews provided fascinating insights into how visitors experience Taiwan. When asked what aspects of Taiwan could be improved, many mentioned the need for more trash cans on sidewalks and better traffic control. Still, they emphasized how friendly and welcoming the locals are. Regarding food, the overwhelming favorite was beef noodle soup, followed closely by xiao long bao and bubble milk tea. One traveler said, "I came for the scenery, but I'm staying for the food!" As for their favorite places, answers varied-from the bustling Shilin Night Market to the serene beauty of rural counties like Pingtung or Hualien, as well as the cultural richness of the National Palace Museum. Taiwan's diversity clearly leaves a lasting impression. We also asked, "What place in your country would you recommend people visit?" Americans mentioned the Golden Gate Bridge, Australians suggested the Murray River, and many Europeans encouraged people to explore their historic cities. Lastly, I shared a hidden gem: Kinmen Island. With its unique military history, local delicacies, and peaceful landscapes, Kinmen offers a different side of Taiwan. I warmly invite you to visit Kinmen sometime-it's a journey worth taking. From Taipei 101 to remote islands, Taiwan truly has something for everyone.

If I Had Only One Day to Live
If I had only one day to live, I would hang out with my sister. My sister is very important to me because we have made lots of sweet memories together. We are very close to each other. On my last day, I would spend the whole day with my sister. We could watch anime and eat our favorite snacks together. We would even visit Japan. It's my favorite country in the world, so I would like to visit there again with my family. One thing I have never done but always wanted to try is playing in the snow. I want to do this because it sounds like a super cool idea. I would make a snowman, have a snowball fight, and even build an igloo of my own. My sister and I would surely have a lot of fun. At the end of the day, I would tell my sister, "We have made lots of sweet memories together. Thank you for everything." I would feel very satisfied because I've done all that I wanted to do. I can wave goodbye to the world with no regrets.

If I Had One Day to Live
If I only had one day to live, I would have lots of things to do. On my last day, I would try topping up some money for my favorite video games because I want to enjoy them without any limitations. I want to make sure I can have as much fun as possible on my final day. One thing I've never done but always wanted to try is going to a beverage shop, buying all kinds of drinks, and tasting one glass of each. I want to do this because so far, I've only tried a few drinks on the menu. On my last day, I want to try as many as I can. At the end of the day, I would feel sad because I wouldn't be able to enjoy the joy of life anymore. But the good news is, I'm still young and healthy. I'm glad that I can continue living my life and create more happy memories.

What I Have Learned from My Failures
Failure is a part of life, and I have experienced it, too. My biggest failure was forgetting my lines during a speaking activity in front of the whole school. It was a bright, sunny morning. Everyone was excited about the English speaking event. At first, everything went smoothly. But all of a sudden, my mind went blank. Those few seconds felt like the end of the world. Everyone was waiting for me to continue, but I couldn't. Finally, one of my teammates broke the silence and continued the talk. When I failed, I felt regret because I had practiced for a long time. Even though I failed, I learned to stay calm and not get nervous when speaking in front of a crowd. There will be more chances for me to speak in public, and I'll be ready for them. Looking back, I'm actually glad I failed, because the experience helped me grow. Now I know that failure is good for me, and I shouldn't be afraid of it.

A Visit to the Haunted House
Something strange and unbelievable happened to me last weekend. It was a bright, sunny day, but suddenly it started pouring. We ran across the fields, looking for a place to take shelter from the rain. I’m Jack the Thin, and my friend is Jeff the Chubby. We came across a house. It was a fancy, ancient, and remote place. We thought it might be haunted. As two brave young men, of course, we decided to visit the haunted house. When we entered, Dennis the Old welcomed us into the living room. A big chandelier hung from the ceiling, giving the room a fancy atmosphere. There was a picture of a brave, handsome soldier on the wall. Was it Dennis the Old when he was young? Who knows? The old man was very quiet. He looked lazy and sleepy. “I’m going to sleep on the sofa. Make yourselves at home,” he said. Jeff and I were puzzled. We had no pillows to lean on and no blankets to cover ourselves. Reluctantly, we had to sleep in the corner of an empty room. To be honest, the floor was not a comfortable bed. However, we were so tired that we fell sound asleep. Rise and shine! The warm sunshine woke us up early. When we got up and looked for Dennis the Old, we found nothing but a skeleton. At that moment, we could no longer call ourselves brave young men. We were scared to death and ran out of the house and back into the fields. Suddenly, we turned around and saw that the fancy, ancient, and remote house had disappeared. The wind blew an old photo into our hands — it was a picture of Dennis the Old, and it said he had died in the war twenty years ago. 我叫 Jack(瘦瘦的傑克)。

Care for Your Fish
Fish are quiet pets. They are easy to feed. You can just put fish food in the tank and let them eat. You don't need to play with them. The following tips will help you care for your fish better. First, you have to have a fish tank that you can see through. The fish tank must be big enough for the fish. It should also have a lid to stop the fish from jumping out. Second, you need to get the things the fish need. They need lights, a heating rod, a filter, an aquarium pump, and seaweed. They may also need some stones and shells. Third, clean the tank every two months. Cut the seaweed with clean scissors and throw away the trimmings. Use a drain pump to change the water in the tank. Make sure the pump is working properly. Lastly, always check if there's enough fish food. You have to give your fish the right food. The food should be the right size for them-not too big or too small. Don't feed them too much because they can't eat too much! Remember, fish die easily. You must make sure you have everything the fish need. If you don't, your fish may die.

A Spooky Experience
Something strange and unbelievable happened to me last weekend. Jack and I had planned to go to a national park. On our way there, it suddenly started to rain. We had no choice but to run to a spooky house nearby. "Knock, knock! Anybody home?" When there was no reply, we opened the door and saw an old lady dressed in white. "She looked just like anyone's grandmother," I thought to myself. She calmly welcomed us into the house, as if she had expected our visit. "It's already too late. Stay for the night and continue your journey tomorrow!" she said. Jack and I looked at each other for a moment and agreed hesitantly. At that time, we hadn't realized that staying overnight in the spooky house was a bad idea. We followed the old lady into the living room. It was big but quite empty. She showed us a large blue couch where we could rest, and a small bathroom nearby where we could take a shower. After we took turns in the shower, the old lady returned and said, "I'll be sleeping in my room. Sleep anywhere you like. Have a good rest, boys." After we waved goodnight to the old lady, Jack and I left the living room to find a bedroom to sleep in. We came to a much smaller room with only one bed and no other furniture. To make things worse, the ceiling lights kept flickering, and we could hear strange noises coming from the walls. We tried to figure out where the sounds were coming from, but there was nothing we could do to stop them. The only thing we could do was ignore the noise and try to sleep. To look out for each other, Jack and I sat back to back. It had been a long day for both of us, so we soon fell asleep. The next morning, we woke up early and quickly got ready to leave. Before we left, we wanted to thank the old lady for her kindness. To our surprise, the old woman had turned into a skeleton, still dressed in white, sitting motionless on the blue couch where we had sat the night before. We were so shocked and scared that we screamed and ran out of the spooky house. Even now, we still can't explain what happened that night. What a spooky experience!
