(English is a piece of cake)
Take a good look at me now 此刻,好好的看我一眼 Cause I'll still be standing here 因為我將一直佇立在此 And you coming back to me is against all odds That's the chance I've got to take I am at odds with sb.(我跟某人不合拍。) 其實中文常說的含著金湯匙出生,在英文的用法是:be born with a silver spoon而不是金湯匙gold spoon喔! All that glitters is not always gold.(不是每個閃閃發亮的東西都是黃金。) A.Don't hang your dirty laundry in the air. (不要家醜外揚) B.I've heard this news on good authority.(這件事情是從可靠消息聽到的。) C.Guess what? Rumor has it that Jane got a promotion to the Marketing manager because she bribed Brian. D.Who told you I am pregnant? Well a little bird told me that you are going to have a shot-gun wedding. E.Grapevine: 就是grape(葡萄)+ vine(藤蔓)=八卦來源。 1.I heard through the grapevine that Jay just divorced his wife. 2.I heard through the grapevine that Dan cheated on Carrie. 1.private(a.) 隱私權→Show some respect for my privacy.請尊重我的隱私權 pirate(n.) 填塞.A到B→stuffy(a.)很悶(沒有空氣對流的情況)→stuffing(n.) This is our company's stuff. A.Don't touch my stuff. B.Please don't use my computer without my permission. (禮貌且正式) C.This phone is private not for public use. A.Please knock on the door before entering my room. B.Knock it off.=cut it out!你不要再鬧了喔!=Don't mess with me. C.This is a knockout.這是贗品(山寨版) D.I knocked over the mug filled with coffee. E.Knock! Knock! 如果到了冰淇淋店的話,我要兩球香草口味的,可別說成two balls of vanilla,而是two scoops of vanilla才對喔!

《Culture》Tsua-Bing Vs. Snow Cones
Now that the weather is getting warmer, it is time for a Taiwanese favorite: tsua-bing. In the United States, Americans also eat a shaved-ice-treat to cool off; it is called the snow cone. Tsua-bing and snow cones are similar because they both use ice as the main ingredient. However, both treats are prepared differently, and represent their place of origin. The tsua-bing is served with fresh ingredients, such as seasonal fruit (mango, watermelon and strawberries) and most commonly: taro, red bean, mung beans, yams, sweetened peanuts, almond junket, and grass jelly. Syrup and condensed milk can be added, but that is up to the customer. The chunks of ice can also be thick if they are crushed by hand or fine if they are crushed by a machine. Tsua-bing is often a group desert that is served in massive quantities on a plate and can feed two to four people depending on the size. Snow cones get their sweetness and color from flavored syrup. Popular summertime flavors include: tootie fruity (a flavor that tastes like bubble gum), root beer, blue raspberry and grape. There is even a rainbow flavor that combines three flavors together: cherry, lemon, and apple. Sometimes, condensed milk is added to snow cones to make them taste similar to ice cream. The condensed milk makes the already sweet food, even sweeter. Unlike tsua-bing, snow cones are not usually served with fruit, peanuts, or beans. The way that the dessert is served is also different. Snow cones are circular in shape, like a ball and served in a paper cone instead of on a large serving dish. So, whether you are scooping a mound of tsua-bing into your mouth or enjoying the icy sweetness of a rainbow snow cone, know that shaved ice is a favorite way to cool off for both Taiwan and the USA.

《Teaching》Creativity is Important in Education
Rote memorization is a necessary form of instruction. There is some content that should remain at the forefront of a student's mind in order to tackle more complex subjects. For example, memorizing phonetic sounds or character meaning is essential to language and reading skills. Furthermore, students must commit multiplication tables to memory before studying geometry or calculus. Memorization will help a student achieve high marks, however, it requires creativity and critical thinking to apply that knowledge in a real-world setting. Creativity and critical thinking skills are necessary to understand and apply abstract ideas and content. Educators believe that, along with memorization, fostering creativity and cultivating critical thinking skills are crucial for curriculums. We must teach students how to think, rather than simply what to think. It is my understanding that some schools in Kinmen County made an effort to increase critical thinking requirements in the curriculum; however, the campaign lost momentum due to unverifiable results. Unfortunately, the growth of creativity and critical thinking skills is not measurable over short amounts of time, nor with the standard multiple-choice exams many schools currently administer. This does not diminish the importance of these skills. Although there are a many ways to measure creativity and critical thinking skills, none are easy, and most require diligent time and attention by instructors. Creativity can be assessed through assignments that require a finished product like a short story, or a musical composition. Critical thinking skills are visible in project-based learning assignments that require students to discover or solve real-world problems. The most important way to introduce creativity and critical thinking into your classroom is to reward originality. Students can be praised for considering alternative solutions to the same problem. As a secondary science teacher in the state of Alabama, I taught students to think with a skeptical mind, and to be critical of all outcomes until they could verify the results for themselves. If public education does not equip students with the knowledge and tools necessary to solve real-world issues, then we are selling our children short, despite our efforts. Consequently, when designing education curriculum, the important thing is to design material that will challenge the students to think differently rather than merely to produce the correct answer.

《Teaching》The First Five Years
"The principle goal of education in schools should be creating men and women who are capable of doing new things, not simply repeating what other generations have done. -Jean Piaget, Swiss developmental psychologist and philosopher Education is important. Early childhood education is even more important in developing a workforce. Around the world, much attention is now being paid to this period in a child's life. Many economists, educators, and journalists have researched and proven that the first five years in a child's life determines much of the rest of their life and educational potential. The American Ounce of Prevention Fund states that at-risk children who don't receive a high-quality early childhood education are: ‧70% more likely to be arrested for a violent crime ‧60% more likely to never attend college ‧50% more likely to be placed in special education ‧40% more likely to become a teen parent ‧25% more likely to drop out of school James Heckman received the Nobel Prize in Economics in 2000 for his work in developing human potential. His work proved that in creating productive citizens emphasizing the development of cognitive skills where knowledge can be tested is not optimal. Rather, the development of social skills must be combined with cognitive skills. Social skills include persistence, attentiveness, and working with others, and together these create a capable and productive work force. A key part of this understanding is that social skill development must take place early in a child's life. With investment in developing social and cognitive skills at an early age, returns on our investment are between 6-10%. These are realized through lower medical costs, lower crime rates, and higher workforce productivity. In a US federally funded program that tracked participants until they were 26, every dollar spent in Chicago parent-child centers generated $4-$11 in returns. The graph below clearly demonstrated the stronger impact of early investment. Clearly paying attention to the first five years of a child's life is very important; for their sake and our own.

(English Is A Piece of Cake)
吃藥(take the medicine);喝湯可不是drink the soup,而是eat the soup,因為歐美湯品中有許多蔬菜和湯料相佐,也算是一道菜(dish)喔。 X:He pushed my cup to the floor. O:He knocked over my cup. X:The hotel room is empty. O:The hotel room is vacant. X:Can you repeat again? O:Could you say that again?=Could you repeat it? X:Alice had an incident in the lab. She spilled some acid on her hands. O:Alice has an accident in the lab. She spilled some acid on her hands. X:We were stolen last summer when we went on vacation. O:We were robbed last summer when we went on vacation. 6.愛德華酷愛健身,而且他有【人魚線】耶!(超夯新聞吸睛單字) X:Edward is totally fanatic about toning up his muscles and he got mermaid line. O:Edward is totally fanatic about toning up his muscles and he got mermaid abs. ●biceps 二頭肌(bi=two, bicycle(n.)腳踏車) ●triceps 上臂三角肌(tri=three, trilingual(a.) 3.I can eat a horse.(俏皮的俚語表達:餓到都可以吃下一匹牛了。) 4.I want to grab a bite of something. Hard to tell. 2. Quit that thought. 3. You never know. 4. Just let it go. 5. Keep it down. 6. We are even. 7. Don't fool me. 8. Don't go overboard. 1.Brian is my science teacher_________ middle school.(Brian是我國中的自然老師。) (A) for (B) of (C) at (D) in 2.This is the key______ the door.(這是門的鑰匙。) (A) to (B) of (C) at (D) for 3.Please come up with a solution_______ the problem.(請想出這個問題的解決方案。) (A) about (B) of (C) to (D) in 4.Lisa is _____ business.(Lisa正在洽公中。) (A) for (B) on (C) at (D) during 5.My elder sister goes to school ______ foot every day.(我姐姐每天走路去學校。) (A) by (B) of (C) on (D) in 6.Caroline arrived _________ Friday morning.(Caroline周五早上抵達倫敦。) (A) for (B) in (C) at (D) on 7.John proposed to me last evening, but I am still uncertain about getting married_____ him. (A) for (B) to (C) at (D) with 8.In my leisure time, I'd like to sing ______ music.(在我空閒的時間,我喜歡跟著音樂歌唱。) (A) to (B) of (C) with (D) by 9.Henry is president _____ South America Airline(亨利是南美航空的總裁。) (A) to (B) of (C) with (D) by 10.This charity will provide the homeless ____ food supply and temporary shelters. (A) to (B) of (C) with (D) for 答案區:真相大白 1.C 2.A 3.C 4.B 5.C 6.D 7.B 8.A 9.B 10.C News! News! Here! No news is good news!<沒新聞就是好消息>這句話應該很耳熟吧! (A) I am dealing with some issues.(我正在處理一些事情:不便透露) (B) I have some family issues.(我家裡發生一些事情。) (A) The government issued the shopping voucher to all citizens.(政府發行消費券給人民。) (B) The bank offers credit card users more benefits by issuing them the VIP card in the airport loung room.

《Culture》Mother's Day
This year, people all over the world will recognize their mothers and significant women in their lives by celebrating Mother's Day. While Mother's Day is often thought of as a day for purchasing greeting cards, carnations, and boxes of chocolate, that was the opposite intention of its creator. Mother's Day in the United States has been a holiday for about 100 years, but holidays celebrating mothers have been around for much longer, and are held in nearly every country in the world. In America, the modern version of Mother's Day was first celebrated by Anna Jarvis in 1908. Following the death of her mother, Jarvis felt that Americans should spend more time honoring their mothers, particularly because society often overlooks the time and effort mothers put into raising children. For many years, she campaigned for support to make Mother's Day an official holiday. In 1914, she succeeded and President Woodrow Wilson declared that the second Sunday in May would be a national holiday celebrating mothers. The most common way to celebrate Mother's Day in the United States is to purchase flowers, often carnations, and greeting cards. A red carnation is often given to a mother who is still alive and a white carnation is often left as a memorial to a mother who is deceased. Children will hand-make cards in school to give to their mothers. Many people go to church services with their mothers on Mother's Day, as well. Often, people will then go out to eat at a restaurant. In Kinmen, people can do much the same thing to celebrate Mother's Day. You can buy flowers for your mother at the local flower shop, or perhaps buy a nice box of chocolate. Why not get creative and design your own card? And kids, why not show how hard you are working on your English by writing to your mother in English? Just simply write, "Happy Mother's Day!" and on the inside you can write all of the reasons why you love your mother. To all the wonderful mothers in Kinmen, Happy Mother's Day!

《English Learning》Three Hot English Idioms: Talking about Weather
The weather is changing in Kinmen. Winter is turning into spring. It's been raining a little more, and the days are getting warmer. Now is a great time to learn English idioms about weather. One of the most famous English weather idioms is, "It's raining cats and dogs." "To rain cats and dogs" means to rain very heavily But native English speakers don't use this phrase very often in everyday conversation. A much more common phrase is "It's pouring." "To pour" literally means to remove water from a container by turning it over (逐字翻譯:把盆裡的水倒掉). But "pour" also refers to heavy rain. An English speaker might say, "Don't forget your umbrella! It's pouring outside." The word "rain" is sometimes included in the sentence, but it's not necessary. For example, you might say, "I don't want to walk home. It's pouring rain." You may also say, "I don't want to walk home. It's pouring." The two sentences mean the same thing-that it's raining very heavily. When the weather is getting hotter, a common English idiom is "the mercury is rising." This phrase refers to the mercury (水銀、汞) in thermometers (溫度計). When the temperature rises, the mercury in the thermometer also rises. So if someone says the mercury is rising, this means the temperature is rising. "The mercury is rising" isn't common in everyday conversation, but it's very common in weather reports on the TV news. A weather reporter may say, "Make sure your air conditioning is working, folks. The mercury is rising outside." With the weather changing, you might catch a cold. If you're feeling a little bit sick or tired, you can say that you're feeling "under the weather" (有點不舒服). This phrase doesn't refer to the weather itself. Instead, it refers to a person's health. For example, "Katie hasn't been at work recently. She's been feeling a little under the weather." With the weather changing and the mercury rising, I hope that these phrases are useful to those learning English and that you don't fell under the weather.

《Culture》Memorial Day
The month of May has numerous important holidays, such as Mother's Day, National Teachers Day, and Cinco de Mayo. One holiday in particular, Memorial Day, is of great importance to Americans. Always the last Monday in May, Memorial Day is a holiday during which Americans remember the hundreds of thousands of brave men and women who died fighting for their country. The most deadly American war was the Civil War from 1861 to 1865, in which roughly 700,000 Americans perished. Americans perform a variety of activities on Memorial Day. If families or individuals have personally known someone killed in battle, often they will visit the grave of their loved one. For instance, many visit the famous Arlington National Cemetery near Washington, D.C where nearly a half of a million fallen soldiers are buried. Individuals typically leave flowers on the grave and bring other items, such as family photos, that have significance to the deceased individual. Memorial Day, in this sense, is somewhat similar to the Taiwanese holiday of Tomb-Sweeping Day (清明節) in that friends and family members visit gravesites and pay their respects. While Memorial Day provides an opportunity for individuals to honor the fallen members of America's armed forces, it also is a time to celebrate the beginning of summer. Due to the more comfortable weather, many individuals spend more time outdoors. The most popular outdoor event is a barbecue. Barbecues are held in public spaces, such as a park, as well as in more private venues, including homes or apartments. Typically, however, the house or apartment will have either a backyard or a rooftop so that all individuals are able to cherish the warmer weather outside. Memorial Day is, therefore, not only a day of remembrance, but also an opportunity to interact with family members and friends in the great outdoors.

《Culture》Arbor Day
On April 26th, Americans celebrate the national holiday of Arbor Day. Arbor Day is held on the last Friday of April and celebrates the importance of trees. Traditionally, Americans plant trees during this holiday. Some people like to plant trees in their backyard, cities plant trees in local parks, and even schools plant trees in their schoolyards. One of my fondest memories as a child was celebrating Arbor Day with my elementary school classmates and teachers. That day, we got out our shovels and we planted several trees in our schoolyard. Over the years, I observed how the trees matured and grew taller, like me. As a native of downtown Chicago, I did not often get to go to the woods and enter into nature. Events held to celebrate the environment like Arbor Day formed my appreciation of trees and my passion for the environment. In a materialistic world, it is easy to forget the value of trees and nature. Scientifically, trees are important because they absorb carbon dioxide and produce oxygen. The absorption of carbon dioxide is crucial in improving the environment and slowing global warming. As humans burn more fossil fuels, such as oil and coal, more carbon dioxide is released into the environment and the planet warms up. Trees help counteract this global trend by taking carbon dioxide out of the environment. Trees not only absorb moisture during the rainy seasons but their root structure also helps keep soil in a fixed location. For that reason, trees are very good at preventing landslides and erosion-something that is particularly important in Taiwan. Although Kinmen is fortunate to have a variety of trees and wildlife, I urge you to plant a tree on Arbor Day. While you may think planting just one tree is insignificant, consider the effect of many people each planting a tree. On the first Arbor Day ever, for instance, approximately one million trees were planted! Therefore, we should all plant trees in an effort to beautify our surroundings and create a safer, greener environment.

《Culture》Earth Day
Celebrate Earth day this year on April 22nd! Earth Day is a day when individuals reevaluate their consumption of the earth's natural resources, and decide to make small, daily changes that will help protect the planet. A few terms or mottos that you could hear and see on this day might be, fossil fuel, Reduce Reuse and Recycle, and compost. Fossil fuels are Earth's natural energy supply, including coal, gas, and oil. Reduce Reuse and Recycle encourages people to conserve energy, water, and fossil fuels, and to reuse manmade materials to cut down on pollution. Composting means taking the contents of your dinner's leftovers and using them to fertilize soil. Even using coffee grounds and banana peels can help your plants grow big and strong. Earth day is important, because it promotes the protection of the Earth's precious resources. How can individuals, companies, and countries help protect the Earth and its resources so that future generations can enjoy its beauty? The process starts with individuals like you. For instance, you could make good, clean choices regarding natural gas, energy, and water consumption. You are not powerless. Every change a person makes helps their home and community. A short list could include, fixing all the leaking faucets (sinks, showers) in your house. You could limit your consumption of red meat (cows are the biggest producers of green houses gases). You could also buy your groceries locally because the less time you spend in your car or on your scooter the less air pollution your vehicle produces. Another easy option is to turn off lights you are not using when you leave a room. You could take more public transportation as opposed to driving your car or scooter. Or, you could ride your bike or walk to your desired location. Taiwan already has a fantastic recycling and trash system. Taiwan's trash collection and recycling system needs to be duplicated and used by countries worldwide. So go out there, make a difference in your communities and environment!
