《Feature Article》Working Holiday: Australia
"Some friends even hugged me for my efforts in sending them love and concerns. Each will be given a rainbow card with some words of reminders or motto in life in order to help them breathe in happiness every second." Origin Henna (known as hina, the henna tree, the mignonette tree, and the Egyptian privet) is a flowering plant and the sole species of the Lawsoniagenus. Historically, henna was used for cosmetic purposes in Convivencia-period Iberia and Ancient Egypt, as well as other parts of North Africa, the Horn of Africa, the Arabian Peninsula, the Near East and South Asia. It was also popular among women in 19th-century Europe. Today, bridal henna nights remain an important tradition in many of these areas. Main Element Whole, unbroken henna leaves will not stain the skin. Henna will not stain skin until the lawsone molecules are made available (released) from the henna leaf. Fresh henna leaves will stain the skin if they are smashed with a mildly acidic liquid. The lawsone will gradually migrate from the henna paste into the outer layer of the skin and bind to the proteins in it, creating a fast stain. Since it is difficult to form intricate patterns from coarse crushed leaves, henna is commonly traded as a powder made by drying, milling and sifting the leaves. The dry powder is mixed with lemon juice, strong tea, or other mildly acidic liquids to make a preparation with toothpaste-like consistency, which can be used to make finely detailed body art. The henna mix must rest for 6 to 24 hours before use, to release the lawsone from the leaf matter. Essential oils with high levels of monoterpene alcohols such as tea tree, eucalyptus, cajeput, or lavender will improve skin stain characteristics. The different words for henna in ancient languages imply that it had more than one point of discovery and origin, as well as different pathways of daily and ceremonial use. Henna has been used to adorn young women's bodies as part of social and holiday celebrations since the late Bronze Age in the eastern Mediterranean. The earliest text mentioning henna in the context of marriage and fertility celebrations comes from the Ugaritic legend of Baal and Anath, which has references to women marking themselves with henna in preparation to meet their husbands, and Anath adorning herself with henna to celebrate a victory over the enemies of Baal. Bridal henna nights are a popular tradition in North Africa, the Horn of Africa, the Arabian Peninsula, the Near East and South Asia. India In India, the longer the henna stays on the bride's hand the longer it is believed that her in-laws will treat her well. If the henna fades out quickly, it's a sign that she will not be happily married. Saudi Arabia In Saudi Arabia, one of the female relatives of the bride is the one who paints the bride's hands with henna, but the relative has to be happily married or else she will bring bad luck to the bride. Somalia In Somalia, henna is worn by Somali women on their hands, arms, feet and neck during weddings, Eid, Ramadan, and other festive occasions. Somali henna designs are similar to those in the Arabian Peninsula, often featuring flower motifs and triangular shapes. The palm is also frequently decorated with a dot of henna and the fingertips are dipped in the dye. Henna parties are usually held before the wedding takes place. Tunisia In Tunisia, henna celebrations last for seven days. On the 3rd day, the bride wears a traditional dress and has henna painted on her hands and feet. As for the groom, his pinky finger is painted with henna on the 6th day. Turkey In Turkey, henna is sold in convenience stores and markets. Among these are the Egyptian Bazaar in Istanbul 『It may be Australia's third-largest city, but for the longest time Brisbane was seen as something of a poor cousin to Sydney and Melbourne: a sleepy country town hiding behind a big city fa?ade. In recent years, however, Brisbane has stirred from its slumber and is casually emerging as one of the most desirable places to live in Australia with an estimated 1000 people packing their bags and moving up here every week. 』

(Feature Article)Working Holiday:Australia
Traveling is always refreshing and enables us to reflect on ourselves over the paths to take for the future. I perfectly understand why people chose to work in a total different place for exploring themselves through adapting to a whole new environment. Not long after the video clip released on YouTube, Taiwanese applicants became the wild card for receiving the greatest popularity among all, Claire Wang made it to the final phase and impressed all participants for the curious eyes attempting to capture all novel ideas and things beyond her scopes. In 2009, Tourism Queensland promoted the Great Barrier Reef as a global tourism destination with a website encouraging people worldwide to apply for The Best Job In The World, to be a "Caretaker of the Islands" to "house-sit" the islands of the Great Barrier Reef for half a year, based on Hamilton Island. Job benefits included a large salary, free lodging in a multi-million dollar villa, and transportation there and around the islands. The application process required a web video to be submitted, available publicly for consideration for the position. The job duties listed were primarily publicity-related with web videos, blogging, and photo diaries. The submission web site crashed two days following the launch of the campaign, from excessive visits and application video uploading. Over 35,000 applications were received from over 200 countries, and whittled down to 16 finalists (including one chosen by an on-line vote). Finalists came from Australia (two), United States (two), United Kingdom, Canada, Ireland, the Netherlands, Germany, New Zealand, Taiwan, India, China, Japan, France and South Korea. Ten were male and their ages ranged from 20 to 39. The candidates were interviewed on the island starting 3 May 2009. The United Kingdom finalist Ben Southall, 34, a charity fundraiser and ostrich-rider from Petersfield, Hampshire, UK, was appointed as the new caretaker of the island on 6 May 2009 Are you ready to plunge into a world full of exotic cultures and strange languages? If you've got a positive answer, you are on the go. Remember, WORKING HOLIDAY IS NOT AN ESCAPE FROM THE REAL WORLD.Your one-to-two-year plan should require deliberation and self-awareness about what the person you determine to be and any values it might bring to you during this amazing trip. Wish you the best luck. Today's we'll go deeper with the budget plan and a very interesting skill of paining from India: Henna along with the picture of Linda Huang's Work. ( It might not be the best select among them, but it's truly original and innovative thing to you all.) (A)How do we apply for it? On previously mentioned article, we've been introducing the official procedures of form-filling and certain regulations issued by Australian Government and Australian Tourism Bureau. And you've got to be noticing the difference weather condition in an opposite hemisphere. Today's we'll go through some details you should know before applying for this program. Employer obligations People working in Australia on a Working Holiday visa are entitled to the same pay and work conditions as Australian residents and citizens. There are a number of obligations that employers in Australia must be willing and able to meet. Employers must: ●Ensure that the employee is paid the salary specified for the nominated position ●Deduct and make tax payments for the employee while employed by the business ●Make superannuation contributions for the employee while employed by the business ●Comply with all relevant workplace relations laws and any employee workplace agreements ●Ensure that the employee holds any license, registration or membership that is mandatory for the performance of their work ●Comply with responsibilities under Australian immigration laws ●Not employ a person who would be breaking Australian immigration laws by being employed. Note: The employer must be lawfully operating a business that is actually and actively engaged in business activities. Example: A business that exists on paper only (for example, a shelf company) is not acceptable. Working conditions Australian law sets pay rates and conditions of employment which cannot be undercut through informal agreements or unregistered contracts. If you have concerns about your pay and conditions, you can contact Fair Work Online or the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR). Brian: B Linda: L B: This time, we'll carefully start the "Money Talk" part. How much did you spend on the air fare and the hotel there? L: Honestly speaking, it's quite complicated to elaborate my expenses for this program. Let me just begin with the fare of economical flights may range from NT$ 45, 000 to NT$ 65,000. The earlier you book, the more reasonable price you may receive. Here's a soft reminder: booking the cheaper ticket may take you plenty of time fooling around the terminals for stopover before heading to the designated destination. It shall be a double-edged sword. The rent can be varied from one city to another. Here's the list of individual rent in accordance with different regions for your reference. There are three forms of accommodation: Share House/ Suite/ Home Stay. The Home Stay Family charged one most and the landlord usually knocks your door every week. Don't be surprised, they charge you by WEEK instead of MONTH. (P.S. Rent in this chart stands for the WEEKLY CHARGE based on the experience of the locals and Taiwanese backpackers.) B:Wow…your sharing of life expense is really organized and detailed, which reminds me, staying at hostel will be a great bargain for those newcomers seeking rooms in a low price. When recalling my 9-day trip in London, I only spent NT$ 2500 on accommodation. Really get past of the burden. And do you self-cater a lot? Just purchase some take-outs often? L: You nailed it, Brian. Having meals at the local shop will shrink your balance and is unlikely to be healthy, so to speak. Even though I am not a master chef, I've been learning how to cook for my boyfriend, Berlin, and I. We've reached a consensus to save up more money by cutting back on our entertainment costs and bring lunchboxes to workplaces. Taught by my family, I've learned to deal with some complicated techniques of boning the ducks, making the poached egg, grilled the drumsticks, and also mix some veggies as tasty salad. Remember? You told me to pour coke over the chicken drumsticks which will be caramelized and softened. And it tasted really AWESOME. You must have been a gourmet when studying in Canada, mustn't you? Taking a stroll to the nearest supermarket, I found pleasure in going window shopping and purchasing some groceries, part of me thinking of it as the great chance to reward myself with some delicious ingredients. Because we don't get any vehicles, public transportation has become more accessible and affordable. Sometimes getting lost is fun, you can dig out some unknown excitement by the warm-hearted locals. My old neighbor, Tina, loved singing and sitting on the rocking chair on the porch in the afternoon and always greeted me when jogging by her place. Sometimes she even brought her home-made pie to my place and had a great chat about the life full of ups and downs, for which I appreciate with such a lovely friend in Australia. Never had I known such plain but beautiful people and things just walked into my life. (B) How to land a part-time job there? After talking to Linda Huang, I did admire her persistence and perseverance toward arts. She acquired this unique technique and also developed into her own characteristic signature presentation of each customer's traits and his or her state of mind channeling emotions at the very special moment at her stand. People walking by her stand are sometimes hooked up by those intricate painting on various parts of human body; moreover, some others even asked her to paint Henna on their face or finger as the certain token or souvenir for this trip, from which she derived great encouragement and inspiration. To Linda, Henna is more than just a tradition rooted in Indian wedding culture but a gesture of giving blessings to people who come to her. Visitors from all walks of life and all ages are overwhelmed by this mysterious approach to arts, unlike any other performances.

(English is A Piece of Cake)
That makes two of us(我們真是有默契呢)而且Great minds think alike(英雄所見略同)。 1.I couldn't stand her tardiness and really felt like giving her a piece of my mind. 首先同學都跟老師學過,各種忍受的用法(stand, bear with, tolerate, stomach, such it up)還有tardy遲到這個高級形容轉成名詞tardiness。 順便比較一下其他類似用法: ●Give sb a break 放過他一馬 ●Give sb a hard time處處刁難他 ●Give sb a hand 伸出援手幫忙他 ●Give sb a finger 對(人)比中指 2. I am really convinced that Susan had it coming for treating her husband like dirt.(我很確 信蘇珊自食惡果,因為她對丈夫非常糟糕) 各位同學可能都發現了:sb has it coming是指"報應來了(It's Karama.)" 3. Your bag is a knock-off. Mine is a REAL DEAL. They are apples and oranges. ●Allen is fleeced.(fleece是綿羊換季被剃毛的動作,這個概念很清楚吧。) ●You are overcharging me. ●I feel like being mugged.(我絕得被當街行搶了。) ●What a great bargain! ●You will never get a lower price than that.(不可能更低價了) ●That's one of the kind.(這可是獨一無二呢。) 4.Don't envy him. He is just "Jack of all trades." 5.We all noticed him always bailing out on us and pretending nothing ever happened. 本次句中提到的bail(v.) EX.:Your rose-red lipstick is overkill for this party and way too old for your old. 6. Thanks for asking. I am alive and kicking after serious bankrupt and loss of my pet.(謝謝你的問候。 I am alive and kicking,我還活繃亂跳呢! I am terribly sorry for your loss(對於您失去XX真的深表遺憾。) You need to make out a case for your suggestions first. No!I just need you to explain more about your suggestions. Who would like to take this job?I will offer double time for it. There's a job opening here. Do you know anyone who may fill the bill?(我們有一個職缺,你知道誰符合要求嗎?) 3、in black and white (X)黑白分明 (O)白紙黑字 說明:black和white指黑字和白紙,所以in black and white意思是白紙黑字寫下來或印出來的書面形式。 用法:I want you to reach this agreement in black and white as soon as possible. 4、keep one's eye on the ball (X)看著球 (O)集中精力 說明:keep one's eye on the ball是體育用語,指打球時須雙眼緊盯球,現在則特別用來比喻在工作上專心致志。 John, your sales record is way down the past quarter. You'd better start keeping your eye on the ball.(約翰,過去一季你的銷售成績一直很差,你最好開始集中注意力在工作上。)

Kinmen:A Welcoming Community
The guidebooks do not do Kinmen justice. Before I moved to Kinmen in August, I tried to gather as much information about Kinmen as I could, which turned out to be very little. If Kinmen is mentioned in a guidebook, it is brief and focuses on military historical sites. While I find the military and political history of Kinmen fascinating, it was hard to get a sense of what it would be like to live here. I feared that it would be a barren landscape, ravaged by years of conflict, where residents kept their distance from foreigners. When I arrived in Kinmen to see the beautiful landscape and to feel immediately welcomed into the community by the people, I was pleasantly surprised. The Mid-Autumn Festival allowed me to experience Kinmen culture as a resident instead of as a passing tourist. People welcomed me into their homes for barbeques to enjoy conversation and local food. I also took part in the Kinmen dice game, held in Jincheng on September 15th. I knew nothing of the dice game, but the people at my table were very helpful and I finally understood the rules. In America, we celebrate many holidays with outdoor barbeques, so I felt at home during the Moon Festival barbeques. However, there is no celebration or community activity like the dice game. I loved being a part of the dice game and sharing in the excitement at the possibility of becoming a winner. Although not a grand-prize winner, I did get to take home noodles and peanut candies. I was also lucky enough to meet Magistrate Li and was invited to play at his table during the second round of the game. That was a very memorable experience. Kinmen! Thank you for welcoming this foreigner into your community. The guidebooks should include a section about the generosity and welcoming nature of the people in Kinmen. I am very happy to call Kinmen my new home.

How to get into College in the U.S.A
As an International student, the American college process can easily be daunting and confusing. Fortunately, there are resources that can make your college application process a bit easier. The College Board's Office of International Education helps International students gain access to their home country's resources, testing information, and application procedures. For more information the website address is http://international.collegeboard.org. Fulbright Taiwan also offers free educational advice as part of EducationUSA, http://www.educationusa.tw. The college application process usually consists of an official high school transcript, a personal essay, standardized test results, and 2-3 letters of recommendations. The personal essay and extracurricular activities are given just as much consideration as transcript grades. Colleges look for intellectually capable, well-rounded students. Be prepared to express what stimulates you outside of the classroom. The personal essay is the perfect opportunity to expand on relevant strengths that were not showcased on the application such as, why you would like to study abroad in the U.S., your personal interests, aspirations, and extra-curricular activities. The personal essay acts as a space for you to communicate what sets you apart from other competing applicants. You will have less control over your letters of recommendation, so make sure the teachers you choose to write your recommendations know you well enough to provide a thorough and flattering description of your academic strengths. These are the basic components of your college application. Standardized testing such as Test Of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT), SAT Subject Tests, and Advanced Placement Exams will be required. However, these requirements will differ depending on the institution. Going to each institution's international student section of the main website to find out more about the requirements for international applicants is highly recommended. The TOEFL tests Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing. The exam is accepted by more than 9,000 institutions in over 130 countries. To learn more about the exam visit http://www.ets.org/toefl. The SAT tests Critical Reading, Writing, and Math. The exam also includes an Essay component. The SAT Subject Tests are about your aptitude for only one subject such as Biology, History, or French. Again, check each institutions main website for SAT testing requirements. The College Board's Annual Survey of Colleges and Universities also provides information regarding the admission requirements for international students. If college fees are an obstacle, then contact the college or visit the website to find out more about Financial Aid for International Students. Funds are often limited so do this very early in the application process. While funds are limited, remember that the final price will only be determined after you apply to the school, apply for aid, and are admitted. So don't be deterred by the initial sticker price. Hopefully with these resources at your disposal, you will be able to navigate the American college process more smoothly. Don't be afraid to contact your target schools with questions. It shows the admission office that you are interested. Good luck!

"Do you mind…"
Trying to ask a favor or to ask for help from another person is delicate. Showing that you are being mindful of the other's time and energy is important. The phrase "do you mind" is a polite way to ask for small favors like borrowing someone's pencil or getting an extra menu at a restaurant. For example, look at this conversation in which Nick asks Daisy to take him to the hospital. Nick:Hi Daisy, how are you doing? Daisy:Hey Nick, I'm doing well. What about you? Nick:Actually, I'm not feeling very well. Do you mind taking me to the hospital? Daisy:Of course! In this situation, Nick is not feeling well, so he wants to go to the hospital. He could have just asked, "can you take me to the hospital," and conveyed the same message. However, he knew that he would inconvenience Daisy. So, he first explained himself and then used the phrase "do you mind" before asking the favor. Using the phrase "do you mind" is a simple way to show that you are courteous; hence you are more likely to get a positive response. The phrase shows that you are aware that you may inconvenience someone and are grateful for the help. Importantly, a softer tone of voice is also key to conveying a polite message. Sentence pattern: Do you mind (-ing verb form) __________? Other examples: Do you mind calling a taxi for me? Do you mind lending me a pencil? Do you mind carrying my bag for me?

(English Is A Piece of Cake)
I want you to be THIN."(我要你變瘦)那個來自德州傷心的女孩寫著: 「After our first date, you gave me this book in an encouraging one but with a despising look. You didn't feel satisfied with the way I looked and started picking on the way I dressed. God blessed me for knowing that dumping you was the wake-up call for me to choose my boy-friend wisely instead of changing myself for a jerk like you. I am beautiful no matter what you said. And don't worry, I won't shed a tear for this pathetic parody.」 ●Despise(v.)嫌惡或看不起=look down on sth/sb跟"despite"(雖然)可是不同喔! 混蛋(尤指很糟糕的男生) ●Pathetic(a.) EX.:Gina used to make fun of the impoverished and the homeless. It's pathetic that her family went bankrupt and she needed to beg by the sidewalk like those she maliciously teased. Karma just came in time. ●Parody(n.)鬧劇 V.S. Tragedy (n.)悲劇V.S. Comedy(n.) 1.This office is taking shape. Oh, your house is beautiful. I love it." Your office is taking shape./ The way you've decorated the room is truly meticulously gorgeous. ●meticulous(a.) Those exotic flowers, which was imported from Indonesia, required adequate sunshine and meticulous care. ●gorgeous(a.) 2.You are out of shape today. 相近的表達語還有: ●You are feeling well today. ●It seems you are under the weather. ●Your face is quite pale. I think you need some rest. ●You don't behave the way you are. 3.Lisa is trying to keep herself in shape. 更不用說obese(病態肥胖)等表達了!要小心用法而不是囫圇吞棗,那你可以這樣說: ●You are gaining weight, aren't you? ●You will look more gorgeous if losing a few pounds. ●That dress totally looks great on you but we need a larger size. 4.Shape up or ship out. =If you cannot stand the heat, stay out of the kitchen. =Rule is rule. Never expect to bend the rule. 台灣同學喜歡說:He is my friend. He is one of my friends, John. Every morning I go to work. …. 中文說價格很貴,但英文不說"the price is expensive" 。而說"it's expensive"。 (X) His arms were painful, which made it difficult for him to operate the machine. (O) The pain in his arms made it difficult for him to operate the machine. (X) My answer to the question made him feel disappointed. (O) My answer to the question disappointed him. (X) I have worked for the company for many years. I'd like to change my job. (O) With so many years working for the company, I feel it's time for a career move.

(English Is A Piece of Cake)
What are friends for? 2.Do you happen to know where the post office is? Can't our final happen to be toughest this time?(我們的期末考不會剛好比較難吧?) 3.I really splurge on my son's five-year-old party! I plunged into the world of Numerology."(我一頭栽進命理學的世界) 4.I find the color scheme rather exquisite and stylish. Pass me the mashed potato"是不是非常常用到的句型阿! 6.Let me foot the bill for it. 7. What seems to be the problem? What seems to be the problem?(請問有怎樣的困擾嗎?) What's wrong with you?(你是怎麼了?) What's got into you?(你神經有問題嗎?)勸大家要少用 ●bad/poor appetite(n.)胃口很差 ●itchy(a.) 嘔吐 ●nauseous(a.)作嘔的 ●run a high fever發高燒 ●light-headed(a.)突然暈頭轉向的 ●drowsy(a.) 無力感的 ●fatigued(a.)極度疲憊的 ●diarrhea(n.)腹瀉=I have the runs. ●hemorrhage (n.) 8.You are in the pink. I am alive and kicking. 【R.I.P. 1.My condolences.(致上哀悼之意) 2.I am at a loss for words.(我真的不知道該說什麼) 3.I can't put my feelings into words.(我的情緒難以表述) 4.I am deeply saddened by the loss we've all shared.(我深深的哀慟) 5.I was saddened to hear about Dr. Lin's demise. I hope and pray that his family will have strength during this time of loss.(聽到林醫師的噩耗,我內心祈禱著他的家人可以有勇氣渡過這個難關) 6.I am so sorry about Hazel, a respectable dancer.(對於海姿這樣令人景仰的舞者,我深表遺憾)_ 【看新聞學英文】:劍橋小王子誕生,全球同慶! 當時我的老師提供了:What is it? Are you expecting a boy?(你預計要生的是男孩嗎?) Both my wife and I are overjoyed at the arrival of my first grandchild. It is an incredibly special moment for William and Catherine and we are so thrilled for them on the birth of their baby boy. Grandparenthood is a unique moment in anyone's life, as countless kind people have told me in recent months, so I am enormously proud and happy to be a grandfather for the first time and we are eagerly looking forward to seeing the baby in the near future. I admire you!(我佩服你!) I'm impressed!(我被打動了!) You're awesome! You're incredible! You did a great job!(幹得好!) You're looking sharp!(你看起來真棒!) You're really talented!(你真有天份!) You're very professional!(你好專業!) I like the way you handled that! I'm very pleased with your work!

(English Is A Piece of Cake)
Gosh! Where's my Smart phone? Did you see that? 另外也請注意公共廣播英文: ●Please switch your cell phones into vibration or silence mode. ●Keep your volume down while chatting on the train. ●Watch your belonging before aligning. Let's roll! (A) OMG:Oh My God! 而OMG=Oh My God! ●Oh Boy:真是惋惜!(比如說你只差一分就趕上火車了,都會脫口而出) (B) BRB:Be Right Back! You are in the middle of something. (D)TTYL:Talk to you later! So long!= See you then!=Keep me posted of your updates.= Keep in touch!=See you around.=Adios.(西班牙語,因為是移民種族為最大宗)=Au Revoir.(法文:再次看到你) (E)TTYN:Talk To You Never. (F)BTW:By The Way 意思為「順帶一提」。 (H)LOL:Laugh Out Loud LMAOF=Laugh My Ass Off. He is completely retarded. 我忍不住隨口抱怨,"He is so retarded." Yes, he is completely retarded."(他是個十足的智障。) 還可以說,"I completely understand." Yes. I completely understand what you meant." 或是 "Yes. I perfectly understand what you meant." 2. Some people have a hard time understanding what 'Glass Only' means. How can people do that?" People have a hard time understanding what 'Glass Only' means." 在上面的例句中,Linda 小妹妹用了have a hard time 是個片語,意即有困難,也就相當於 have difficulty (in) V-ing 這個片語。 People have a hard time understanding what 'No smoking' means." 或是 "People have difficulty understanding what 'No smoking' means." How can people smoke here?" 3. I laughed incredibly hard last night. I almost died. It was fun. I like it."(很好笑,我很喜歡。) I laughed incredibly hard last night. I almost died."(我笑得很誇張,差點沒笑死。) "I almost died." 如果平鋪直述的話,就是 "I was so full last night." I was incredibly full last night. I almost died." 4. She thought she was the center of the universe when we played volleyball. 特別是有種人常以為自己是領導人物,別人都要聽他的,老美就會說這種人自以為是 center of the universe 或是說他們 "They always have to be the center of attention." Why should I listen to you? Do you really think you are the center of the universe?" I have no income and I have to pay my tuition. I am the poorest of the poor. I would like to donate some money to the poorest of the poor." The impoverished. = The underprivileged.=The disadvantaged. 跟 poorest of the poor 遙相呼應的則是 richest of the rich,看字面上的意思就知道這是指有錢人裏面最有錢的一群。比方說 "There is no question that my boss is the richest of the rich."(亳無疑問的,我的老板肯定是有錢人裏面算是最有錢的。) The richest of the rich.

(English Is A Piece of Cake)
非常接近,在加油點(way to go)?! 生日的時候除了要吹蠟燭(blow the candles)、許三個願望(make three wishes)、親友相聚(reunite with friends and relatives),當然重頭戲就是拆禮物(unwrap the gift)啦! 在同學的日記裡提到了:「I am afraid of winter because it's really cold.」 I dislike winter because of the bitter cold.(這邊不是指口味上的「苦澀」而是十分冷冽)。 使人沮喪或生氣→I have an upset stomach.(我肚子很不舒服) 4.provoke (v.)挑釁→provocative (a.) EX.:North Korea's warning of launching the nuclear weapons has been rather provocative and posed a threat to global security mechanism. 5.精選形容詞篇:弱→強 ※awkward(a.) 令人不悅的→unacceptable(a.)無法接受的→disgusting(a.) (A) I am in the middle of something. (B) I wish I could help you. But the manager asked me to accomplish the financial statement by this afternoon. (I wish I could. (C)If it's not urgent, please leave it to my desk. I will take care of it later, okay? (D)Since you've been around the office for a week, you shouldn't be out of the loop all the time. ※Do you need me to stick around?(你需要我多留一會兒嗎?) (E)What can I do for you?(after learning the details….) It's way beyond my knowledge. Could I recommend to you an expert in Photoshop, Emma? She can certainly perfect the work. (表達「不知道」的概念你也可以說:I am clueless.= I am all Greek to____.= Not even ring a bell.= That beats me.) (F) Can't you see my work is up to ears? Take responsibility for yourself. Grow up ! 或是老師愛用的"Tell me about it." (G) You expected me to rock your cradle and give you the golden stars, uhu? If you cannot stand the heat, stay out of the kitchen. (If you cannot stand the heat, stay out of the kitchen. (A)(辦公室混水摸魚篇) As long as you've fulfilled the designated task, you can make good use of the rest of your office hours at will, such as updating We-Chat messages, surfing the internet, and keeping abreast of(or with) the latest news(=current affairs). →片語前情提要(previously on): 1.pick the slack for… 5.designate(v.) (B)(賺加班費篇) Given that the additional compensation will be given to employees for working overtime, some of my co-workers in my departments deliberately (=purposely=intentionally) take advantage of this policy by staying longer than usual. (C)(生活與工作篇) As an efficient and engaged employer, I do consider "system of job responsibility(責任制)" not as suffocating as it appears but a drive to have our teammates accomplish appointed projects as scheduled. I figure I might as well derive more pleasure from drawing a fine line between work and private life. Bringing work home is really not my thing.(把工作帶回家不是我的風格) →可多使用「使役動詞」達成語氣簡潔及指令明快。 1.draw a fine line between A and B….. 可以在A和B中有區別 2.figure(v.)揣測或理解 3.might as well大概會 V.S. had better +V.R.(你)最好怎樣→語氣很強硬 (D)(天高皇帝遠的老闆) Most supervisors live in their own little world of fantasy and are also out-of-the-touch from what's really going on at workplace. & out-of-the touch 完全疏遠或沒有連結的→far-fetched(a.)遙不可及的 (E)(家庭生活娛樂互動) Speaking of the interaction with my wife, we tend to spend more time seeing the horror in the movie theater; what's more, she's also the big fan for Stephen King's collections of thrillers, especially for Psycho, the groundbreaking masterpiece. On the contrary, shivering and grabbing her arm during the film was my signature moves and I feel downright regretful after be seated there. What's worse, what my friends shared with about their unusual encounters really gave chills on my spine/goose bumps.(freaked me out) I cannot help but keep fidgeting in the movie theater for such a long film. Bangkok came out on top in 2013 thanks to the city's generosity, hospitality and kindness which have contributed to the global top spot.

(English Is A Piece of Cake)
(A)「My mother has a heart of gold and HE is always dedicated to our family.」 My mother has a heart of gold and she is always dedicated to our family. ※專欄回饋時間:英語學習盲點 讀者陳先生來信請教老師:「Brian老師您之前專欄提過dedicated的用法,我在英語雜誌上有內容說到 " This president has been single-mindedly engaging into his business and recruits talents from various fields in Asia." (B)Most of my co-workers love to sneak out the office and he usually resumed his work half an hour after lunch break. 偷溜出去→sneakers運動鞋 2.resume(v.) Most of my co-workers love to sneak out the office and they usually resumed their work half an hour after lunch break. (C) I am addicted with the computer and am almost glued to the desk. →這裡是固定用法 be addicted " to " + 人事物;addict(v.) I am addicted to the computer and am almost glued to the desk. (D)Known as an authority in the filed of biotechnology, Lisa was extremely diligent on her experiments and therefore wins this great recognition of her achievement. Known as an authority in the filed of biotechnology, Lisa has been extremely diligent on her experiments and therefore won this great recognition of her achievement. With Kate Middleton's due date rapidly approaching, royal baby fever is in full swing in the United Kingdom. Limited-edition royal biscuits, velvet diaper covers and Union Jack pacifiers are just some of the items available for purchase. 在描述凱特王妃的「Will she deliver?」 例句: ●Last week, the supplier promised to deliver ten printers within 3 days. ●Can you guarantee prompt delivery of this order? 例句: ●She is going to deliver a presentation on the new marketing strategy later. ●Kate's due date is July 11! Will she deliver on time? 例句: ●Your term paper will be due on this Friday. ●My car loan is due this week. ●The mother-to-be scheduled a C-section on week before due date. ●The financial statements are due on Friday 此外,due to是重要片語─「由於」,等於because of。 (A)because + S . V. O. (完整子句) EX.: I was late because I was stuck in the traffic jam. (B)because of + V-ing/ N./N.P. EX.: I was late because of the traffic jam. 例句: ●The flight is delayed due to a mechanical problem. Basic charges for your monthly telephone service are billed 30 days in 1 . The total amount due must be received by the due date, which is printed on the lower left-hand corner of your bill. Please…(題目參考來源:多益情報誌) (A)advance (B) advanced (C) advancement (D) advancing 解析: 本題的正確答案是(A)。 The total amount due must be received by the due date, which is printed on the lower left-hand corner of your bill. Dieting( Go on a diet) M: Mary R: Rose 1.M: Rose, you are eating like a bird. 2.R:I'm just not that hungry today. 3.M:Is there something wrong? Are you sick? 4.R:No, I am fine. Actually, I am on a diet. 5.M:On a diet? Don't be silly! You are slim enough 節食? 6.R:No, I am not. I've been putting on weight lately.

Things sail as smoothly as planned.(一帆風順)肯定是大家最最期待的事情。 有人說 "Life begins at the end of your comfort zone." 你還在講"Let's go? 1.Mr. Dexter usually spends a lot of time to study the bible and English literature. 2.My family more prefer beef than chicken for three meals. 3.Please send Mr. Roger to the airport this afternoon, or he may not be able to catch the plane. 4.You really should cut your hair. It's a total mess. 5.Excuse me, I need to turn off and start my computer again for better efficiency. 6.I am used to jogging in the morning and doing Pilates in the evening to stay in shape. 7.This restaurant offers a variety of exotic dishes and cozy atmosphere with reasonable prices. 8.Her rude comments on my performance really pissed me off. 9.In my leisure time, I tend to play with my friends in the park or go for a spin along the coast. 10.All audience found Joseph's speech persuasive and he received the standing ovation. Dexter usually spends a lot of time studying the bible and English literature. ●人+ spend + Time/ $ + on N(sth)/ (in) V-ing EX.:She spent three hours riding the bike in the park. ●事 + take(s) + Time ( for sb )+ to VR. EX.:It takes Emily twenty minutes from home to school on foot. ●事+ cost(s) + $ + to VR EX.:This bill costs me an arm and a leg. →an arm and a leg可不能直翻「一個胳臂和一條腿」喔! &Brian小提醒:聰明的讀者一定發現"spend"的主詞一定是「人」喔! 2.My family prefer beef to chicken for three meals. Please repeat it again! You can access to our website for further information. You can access our website for further information. 3.Please take Mr. Roger to the airport this afternoon, or he may not be able to catch the plane. The Sportswear Shop運動服飾店) ●到某地放某人下車:drop sb off at(ex. The aquarium水族館) ●接送區:Kiss and Ride Area/Parking (吻別和急迫把親友接上車的景象是不是很可愛呢!^^) ●歐美國家叫計程車(cab)的時候,對方可是會問Van or Regular? You really should have your hair cut. It's a total mess. I cut my hair last weekend. It looks horrible. 打層次 -thin(v.) 捲髮 -straighten(v.) 5.Excuse me, I need to reboot my computer again for better efficiency. My computer crashed.=My computer is frozen.(更慘的:dead) 6.I am used to jogging in the morning and doing Pilates in the evening to stay in shape. Keep oneself in shape=stay in shape I have been out of shape. ●Used to+V.R.過去習慣於(no longer現在不做了) EX.:The tsunami used to claim a great number of villagers in April. ●Be/Get Used to+ V-ing現在習慣於 EX.:But for Brian's encouragement, I won't get used to listening to English-teaching program on a daily basis. 7.This restaurant offers a variety of exotic dishes and cozy atmosphere at reasonable prices. 8.Her rude comments on my performance really pissed me off. (A)This really gets on my nerves.(你讓我很惱怒!) (B)It 's outrageous.(這太過分了!) (C)It's way too incredible to buy it.(這扯到鬼才會信。) (D)I am losing patience with you.(我對你快沒耐性了。) 9.In my leisure time, I tend to hang out with my friends in the park or go for a spin along the coast. & go for a spin指(開車)兜風 10.All audience found Joseph's speech persuasive and he received the standing ovation. &persuade(v.)強迫推銷→persuasive(a.) (A)She persuaded me into buying it. (B)The salesman persuaded us to buy his product. &convince(v.)使人心服口服→convincing(a.) (A)He convinced me of his innocence. (B)I was convinced that he knew the truth.

(English Is A Piece of Cake)
(Don't make excuses for your laziness)! What have you been up to? Just chill? My brain was fried last night for cramming for the new project. Think you are in the middle of sth, just keep me posted, alright? 1.What have you been up to? 2.Just chill. 臨時要準備(或背誦;cram school補習班) 5.sb in the middle of something (sth簡寫)正在忙當中 6.keep me posted隨時保持聯絡 1. I am going to have a test. Knock on wood. Brian老師在之前專欄也有提過:Break a leg或是Cross one's fingers for xxx.。 I nearly got hit by a car.。 2.I will call on you next weekend. 但是, call on 感覺上是很正式的拜訪,大家的盲點都在於中文說去「找」朋友,所以一不小心就容易說成 "I am going to find my friend"。 3.We stopped by London this summer break. OK, I'll drop by and see you performing。Stop by 和 drop by 都是很常用到的片語。 4.I want to run some errands. 如要去寄信、去買東西、又要去領錢,就是run some errands或是 do some errands。 After I finished chores. I sat down and had a cup of coffee. I have to thank my mom. She spends her whole life taking care of her children and running errands. 5.There is a bunch of books 在台灣大家都習慣說 a lot of. 可是這裏老美除了 a lot of ,他們還很喜歡說 a bunch of。 I just ate a bunch of cookies. I have a bunch of friends.(我有一堆朋友)→較正式說法:I have a few friends.→高級說法:I have a great number of friends. 6. You don't have to pull out your stationery. Everybody pulls out your textbook.除了把什麼東西給拿出來,惡作劇老美也用 pull out 這個字,叫pull out a gag 。 7. They hang out a lot. Do you hang out with Americans? I have an appointment with my boss, I have a date with my boss. 8. She is driving me bananas.=She is driving me up the walls. I will go bananas if she doesn't show up in ten minutes. Injuries derailed what previously had been a promising career. Turn the ____________ upside down. (把皺眉頭翻轉過來=破涕為笑 Answer: 1. sprain 2. crack 3. raise 4. drop 句中的what是一個關係代名詞,等於「the thing which」;what的前面不能放名詞的先行詞。 Everyone said that she is a promising entrepreneur.(每個人都說她是個有前途的創業家。) Wang injured his right foot running the bases in an Interleague game in Houston in 2008 and then suffered a right shoulder injury during the 2009 season and was forced to miss all 162 games the following year. 【例句】 He suffers from depression.(他遭受憂鬱症之苦。) She missed the flight to Boston because of the traffic jam.(她因交通阻塞而錯過前往Boston的班機。) He returned in 2011 but so far has been unable to regain his previous form. Injuries derailed what previously had been a promising career. Wang injured his right foot running the bases in an Interleague game in Houston in 2008 and then suffered a right shoulder injury during the 2009 season and was forced to miss all 162 games the following year. He returned in 2011 but so far has been unable to regain his previous form.

(English Is A Piece of Cake)
1.Impossible! = No way! = Out of the question! 2.Over my dead body(強烈說法:等我死了再說) 3.You are daydreaming.(你在做白日夢吧!) 4.You wish!(哈利波特經典用語:你想得美!) 5.It is unlikely to happen. 6.Talk to my hand.(當你被搭訕時,很不想跟對方交談就可以這樣說,請順便翻白眼do the eye-rolling才更活靈活現。) <生活實用句> A:Dad, I really have to join the prom tonight which really matters to me. B:Dress like a hooker? You will never go out of the door in that dress! Over my dead body. 【可能表達】 1.It's totally possible./workable./plausible./practical. 2.Positive!(當別人問你Are you sure?,可以這樣回答表達非常肯定!) 3.Sure thing.=Why not? 4.I give you the green light.(很好理解的表達,因為綠色green就是紅綠燈traffic light通行的意思囉!) 5.You have the floor.(你有發言權了!) (A)陷阱大冒險下集測驗題:回家作業翻譯時間 1.Tap or still? Could I have some water? 2.He really has a deep pocket. (A) He burns a hole in the pocket. (B)How much pocket money do you have for a month? (C)Please be aware of the pickpockets in crowded places! (去人潮多的地方小心扒手!) 3.It's not over until the fat lady sings. 4. I smell the rats. Everyone seems rather tense when I stepped into the boardroom. I smell the rats. 5. Frank has butterflies in his stomach. 6. Eric has nothing but money. 7. Eric has everything but money. 8.Aside from English, my mother can speak several languages. Aside from…. 9.You just dodged a bullet. 10. I expect more from you. I am disappointed at you. (= You really let me down.) You should move on. Ψlive up to one's expectation 達到…(某人的期望) 11.Money talks. 12.Your days are numbered. 13.Shape up or ship out. We are in the same ship 14.Give it a shot. 15.Taking this test is like walking on eggshells. Why? I've got that name at the tip of my tongue"(=slip my mind滑過我的腦海),意思是"他的名字就在我舌尖上,只是一時想不起來" 。 No rubbish to be tipped here." Not all closed doors are locked; give it a push, and it might just open.

Presidents Xi and Obama to talk cyber security ◆cyberpet - cyber + pet,電子寵物 ◆cybersex - cyber + sex,網路性愛 ◆cyberaddition - cyber + addition,網路成癮→be addicted to對... Did you "GET" it? 1. You are not going to win your employees' loyalty when you overwork them and pay them minimum wage. Get real! Stop being a couch potato, go out and get a life! You are the life at the party. 3. She needs to get a grip and focus on something else other than her anger. I got the picture; you don't have to repeat yourself. I study in the library. How often…(do you + VR)……? A: How often do you go to the gym/fitness center? (你多常去健身房) B: Twice in a week./ Every two weeks./ It depends.

2.I am sick of your teasing.(網路上常看到的影片teaser就是 (我受夠你的嘲諷了!) 3.I am homesick./seasick/airsick . (我想家/暈船/暈飛機) 4.I am missing sick of you. Today is my 31st birthday, and having recently become a father I now realize how precious life is and how important it is to spend my time doing something that makes me, and other people, happy. 本句是用and連接了A、B兩句。句A是「Today is my 31st birthday.」,而句B是「Having recently become a father, I now realize …」。 For that reason, I hereby give notice of my resignation, in order that I may devote my time and energy to my family, and to my cake business which has grown steadily over the past few years. 的常用說法,後面如果接動詞要用「in order to +V」;如果接句子要用「in order that +句子」。 He devoted his whole time to translating the book.(他付出了所有時間翻譯這本書。) 2.「S + devote + 反身代名詞(-self/-selves) + to +Ving」 例:They devoted themselves to running the coffee shop.(他們專心致力於經營這間咖啡廳。) 3.「S + beV + devoted + to +Ving」,在此把devote的過去分詞devoted視為形容詞,前面用be動詞。 例:She is devoted to teaching these students.(她奉獻心力教這些學生。) I wish the organization and my colleagues the best for the future and I remind you that, if you enjoy this cake, you can order more at www.mrcake.co.uk 「我祝福單位組織與同事們有最好的未來;而我也要提醒你們,如果喜歡這個蛋糕,請至以下網址訂購。」 OE Furniture Company is ________ to providing contemporary furniture at old-fashioned prices. 句中的「致力」用的是前述的dedicate,也就是devote的同義字,用法為前述的三種: S + devote/dedicate + 投入的事物(例如金錢、時間、精力) + to +Ving = S + devote/dedicate + 反身代名詞(-self/-selves) + to +Ving = S + beV + devoted/dedicated + to +Ving 解題的關鍵是空格前的be動詞is與空格後沒有投入的事物或反身代名詞。 本文的「precious」、「give notice of my resignation」、「grown steadily」、「over the past few years」、「remind」都是值得一學的用法。

《Culture》Father'sDay
He's the strongest, kindest, and smartest guy you know. He's the co-leader of the family. Who is this great guy? Well, it happens to be your dad, and countless other dads like him around the world. How can we celebrate such a great guy who does so much for us? Americans, Taiwanese, and people from many countries around the world celebrate a holiday called Father's Day. Nobody is quite sure how Father's Day became worldwide. Some people claim that it began 4,000 years ago when a young boy named, Elmesu made his father a card out of clay. However, the most popular story in the United States is that it became a holiday in 1916. In that year, a young girl named Sonora Louise Smart Dodd wrote to the American president, Woodrow Wilson, asking him to create a national holiday which commemorated fathers. Smith's own father was a Civil War veteran and a single parent who raised six children. While the day is now celebrated worldwide, different cultures celebrate the holiday at different times and with different customs. For example, in the United States, we choose to celebrate the holiday in June. This year the day is the 16th. In Taiwan, however, Father's Day always is on August 8th. What can you do for father's day? How about make dad some breakfast in bed, play a game with him, make him a card, buy him a tie, or give him some flowers (roses are the preferred flowers for dads). Here is an excerpt from my favorite Father's Day poem called, "Father's Day" by Mary Frances Bogle: "Over the years As we grow old, We remember our father So brave and bold."

《Culture》Learning the Guzheng
Music has always been a passion of mine; it runs in my family. My mother said I could tap my foot to the beat of a radio song before I could walk. When I was five years old, my mother didn't ask me if I wanted to play an instrument, rather, she asked me what instrument. Here in Kinmen, I have tried to maintain this passion. Sometimes I sneak away during lunch hour to play the piano in the music room when no one is around. However, this occasional opportunity did not fully satisfy my desire and thirst for music. Consequently, I sought out the opportunity to learn a traditional Chinese instrument. About two months ago, I began learning the guzheng, or Chinese zither. The guzheng, although comparable to the piano, is taught without traditional western musical theory. Eastern instruments are taught using a pentatonic scale, with five note octaves repeating. Conversely, western musical theory is written on a seven note staff, with major and minor scales, known as the heptatonic scale. Despite studying piano, saxophone, and guitar, I find learning the guzheng to be quite challenging due to the differences in music theory. Once a week, I have a guzheng lesson with an instructor that flies in from Taipei for part of the week to share her talents with Kinmen students. The joy I have gained as a result of learning to play is unparalleled. It has provided me with yet another outlet to embrace Taiwanese culture. My instructor assigned two eastern style music books that are written all in Chinese. Despite the language barrier, there is no music barrier; music is a universal language. I find the sound of a guzheng both alluring and soothing. I still have quite a way to go before I am confident enough to tackle more challenging material on the guzheng. Learning an instrument during my time in Kinmen will leave me with a long lasting memory, and a foundation for a musical skill I hope to build upon in the future.

《Teaching》Alice's Adventures at the KETLC
Last month thirty-three hardworking students from all Kinmen elementary schools gave up their weekend free time to join Fulbright and local English teachers in a celebration of language and literature at the KETLC. The two-day camp was themed after "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland," the famous children's book by Lewis Carroll, which emphasizes creativity, mathematics, and logic. Students who participated used English to practice creative writing, logic games, and drama. What made this camp special for me was the work ethic of the students who volunteered to come. In the beginning, the highest ranked students were offered the opportunity to come, but many of them chose not to attend because they had more pressing commitments. So the option was given to students who had lower English averages. As a teacher, these students impressed me because of their motivation and their behavior. One of the major lessons in the book is that people must display proper behavior toward one another; we call this behavior "manners." Manners are the actions we do to show others that we have respect, not only for them, but also for ourselves. I was affected by just how well the students behaved during the creative writing class that I taught. The content was challenging, and at times, I am sure, boring. The camp concluded with a drama in the readers' theater style. Groups performed scenes from the book after designing costumes and blocking their actions. My students performed a scene called Golden Afternoon in which Alice is made to feel alienated and cast out from a garden by a group of flowers that have no manners. During the practice, I emphasized with my students that the importance of this scene is that we treat all outsiders and foreigners with the same respect we would treat our neighbors. It is not surprising to me, after a year in Kinmen, that these students would already embody so many of the good manners and friendly motivation that is characteristic of the people of Kinmen.

(Englishisapieceofcake)
(The weather has been changing a lot),希望不要影響大家念英文的好心情喔! (A) Hurray:驚呼! 也有外國的朋友會說Wooopi(嗚逼)! EX.: Hurray! Eric passed the college examination and get admitted to National Taiwan University. (B)Hurry:催促的命令→Hurry up !(請特別注意它的發音是: /h'3i/ ,音近「喝一」不是「賀瑞依」) EX.: What's taking you so long? Hurry up, or we're going to be late for our train. What is themeaningfor the word? What does the word mean?= What does the word refer to?「意思」在中文裡是名詞。 (X) You must return back the projector by next Friday or you'll be fined. (O)You must return the projector by next Friday or you'll be fined. (X) She married old. (O)She married late in life. →年紀大才結婚,我們用late in life而不用old。 (X)I saw it on the newspapers. (O)I read it in the newspapers. (X) Don'tmake the office out of order. (O) Don't leave the office in a mess. 用"leave ……in a mess"。 5. (X)I need to call a lot of phones. (O) I need to make a lot of phone calls. →打電話用make phone calls;有些人會直接用I call the phone。 I've got to answer this call .(這通電話很要緊,我必須得接。) 6. (X)Is there any place for me in the car. (O) Is there any room for me in the car. 2013年1月份大學學力測驗圖片寫作題就考到讓座的說法:yield one's seat to = give up one's seat to sb……; 博愛座: prioirty seat。 7. (X)Let's play together. (O)Why don't you come over? Why don't you come over?" (X)Where is the capital of Japan? (O)What is the capital of Japan? What's your destination for summer break? He treated me very friendly. He treated me in a friendly way.(五顆星超道地說法) →Friendly是形容詞,它並沒有副詞形式,不能用來修飾treat。 10. There is a limit in my patience. There is a limit to my patience. Limit搭配的介系詞是to;不用in。 (練習開始) 1.I often hear music in my room. 2.The color of that shirt matches me perfectly. 3.An old lady was badly wounded because a car hit her. 4.Allen always says the truth. 5.Jessica wants to marry a man who has a good work. (解答時間) 1.I often listen to music in my room. listen是指「專注地聽」,例如聽課、聽從父母的建議;hear則用在聲音不經意地傳到耳裡的情況,例:Do you hear someone shout? →sth is music to my ears:指某人說的話或事情聽起來很順耳或能夠接受。 EX.: Compared with my parents' demanding languages, Brian's advice is music to my ears. →face the music:面對現實。 2. The color of that shirt suits me perfectly. suit用在指某人身上衣物的造型或顏色和此人很相配;而match通常用來形容一個東西和另一個東西很搭配, 例:This shirt matches your blue tie. 3. An old lady was badly injured because a car hit her. wound指在打鬥或戰爭中受傷,也就是被刀、槍等銳器所傷,如:Many soldiers were badly wounded in a war.;至於injure運用的範圍較廣,主要指人在意外事故中受到傷害,有時也可用來指精神或健康方面的損傷,如:Smoking will injure your health. 4. Allen always tells the truth. tell用在某人「告訴」對方一件事或一個故事時,例:tell a story。此外,說謊(tell a lie)、說實話(tell the truth)、看時間(tell the time)也都是用tell。 5. Jessica wants to marry a man who has a good job. work是不可數名詞,並且是指「差事」,我們每天都可以做不同的work;但job卻是指固定的「職業」,如記者(journalist)、建築師(architect)、證券營業員(the Securities Specialist)等。 說到這個Rose,除了經典歌曲The Rose旋律動人和歌詞講述愛情中的酸甜苦辣,其實對老師有相當的影響的就是高中英文老師在畢業紀念冊上寫著: "Life is not always a bed of roses; therefore, you should encouter obstacles and grow out of them" .(生命不總是如願,你必須從面對挑戰中成長。) 4. a wet blanket 掃興的人。

《Culture》Fun in the Sun
Summer vacation has started in the United States. For many Americans, summer vacation means beaches, barbeques, and other fun in the sun. School children finish school in early June. Most students don't return to school until August or September, so many families use summertime for a family vacation. Beaches are a popular destination. The United States has a long coastline with many beach towns. From Cape Cod in Massachusetts, to Miami Beach in Florida, beaches are full of tourists in the summer. Many Americans love the sun, so lots of people like to tan at the beach-lie in the sun and get darker. For people who enjoy the water, surfing and "boogie boarding" are also popular activities at the beach. Many beaches in the United States have a boardwalk-a long path made of wood. People can walk or ride their bike along the boardwalk. There are many restaurants, small food vendors, and souvenir shops lining the most boardwalks. Summertime is also when many people eat barbeque. Barbeque is a style of cooking. It usually refers to chicken or pork cooked outside over a wood or charcoal fire. Barbeque is cooked very slowly-often for several hours-and it usually has a sweet and spicy sauce on it. Every region of the United States has their own style of barbeque, but the state of Texas is probably most famous for their barbeque, as well as other parts of the South. Barbequing is a very popular activity in the summer in the United States, especially when large groups of family, friends, or neighbors get together. "Grilling" is another popular activity in the summertime. Barbeque takes a long time to cook, so people often cook outside over a much hotter charcoal fire. This process is called grilling. Almost any food can be grilled. Hamburgers and hotdogs are common, but other popular foods include bratwurst, fish, steak, vegetables, and kebobs. Now that summer has arrived in the United States, Americans everywhere will be trying to spend as much time as possible having fun in the sun.

《Culture》D-Day: The Normandy Beach Landings
On June 6, 1944, the Allied Forces made up of American, British, and Canadian troops invaded the beaches of Normandy, France in order to fight the Nazi forces during World War II. This day is known in America as D-Day, which is the day on which a military operation takes place. In the West, D-Day is remembered as a turning point in WWII. Then, Allied Expeditionary Forces began to defeat the Germans who had already conquered France and most of Northern Europe. The invasion was carried out in two ways: an amphibious landing and an airborne assault. In an amphibious landing, soldiers ride on boats with wheels, like a car or tank. The amphibious vehicles land on shore, the soldiers get out, attack, and try to win the beach. In an airborne assault, soldiers fly in airplanes and then jump out using parachutes and hopefully land safely on the ground before beginning their attack. The Allies had to successfully overcome many obstacles to ensure a successful invasion. Perhaps the most fundamental was the weather. To allow for the amphibious assault on the beaches, the timing of the tides had to be correct. To ensure this, the Allies had to wait for a full moon so they could land without worrying about anti-landing obstacles put in place by the Germans. The Supreme Commander of the Allied Expeditionary Forces was American General Dwight D. Eisenhower who was later elected to be the 34th President of the United States. In his radio address to the troops before the invasion, he tasked them with destroying the German war machine, ending Nazi oppression of the peoples of Europe, and securing the freedom of people all over the world. His tone in the radio address is surprisingly calm considering the difficulty of the mission that was in front of him. Today, many Americans remember with pride the courageous efforts of the soldiers who fought, many dying, in order to protect the world from Nazi expansion. As a boy, on June 6th, veterans from my community would come to my school and talk about their experience in the war. The main message they communicated was one I have learned well during my year in Kinmen, where invasion was a constant threat for decades. This message was that we often forget the sacrifices that have been made to secure our freedoms. Every year they said, freedom is not free.

《Culture》TheBaseballExperience
America's favorite pastime is and always will be baseball. Professional baseball in America is over 125 years old and continues to be the best attended sport in the country. Every year, more than 70 million Americans attend baseball games! In total, there are thirty teams who play at the elite level-29 are in America and one is in Canada. While baseball is not the most tiring sport, the American baseball season is a long and grueling test of stamina, of energy over a long period of time. Each team plays a minimum of 162 games every season, and often goes for weeks at a time without a free day. Most of baseball is played during the summer months of June, July and August. Americans attend not only to enjoy the warmer weather but also to cheer on their favorite baseball team. Attending a game is truly a unique experience. Food and drink vendors walk throughout the stadium, selling delicious snacks and beverages. Without standing up, attendees can get everything from hot dogs, to cola, to peanuts delivered directly to their seat. If you are particularly lucky, you may even catch a foul ball! Although considered unsportsmanlike, "booing" the opposing team is also quite common. Attending a baseball game in America is all about the experience. Watching a baseball game on television is simply not the same as the real event in a baseball stadium. In the future, if you have an opportunity to go to America you should attend a baseball game. I strongly encourage you to go and experience the upbeat, enthusiastic environment. Alternatively, as Taiwanese baseball continues to rise in popularity-due to the success of baseball stars like Chen Wei Yin and Wang Jian Min-perhaps you can attend a baseball game between two of Taiwan's four professional baseball teams. Be sure to bring some peanuts!

(English is a piece of cake)
Take a good look at me now 此刻,好好的看我一眼 Cause I'll still be standing here 因為我將一直佇立在此 And you coming back to me is against all odds That's the chance I've got to take I am at odds with sb.(我跟某人不合拍。) 其實中文常說的含著金湯匙出生,在英文的用法是:be born with a silver spoon而不是金湯匙gold spoon喔! All that glitters is not always gold.(不是每個閃閃發亮的東西都是黃金。) A.Don't hang your dirty laundry in the air. (不要家醜外揚) B.I've heard this news on good authority.(這件事情是從可靠消息聽到的。) C.Guess what? Rumor has it that Jane got a promotion to the Marketing manager because she bribed Brian. D.Who told you I am pregnant? Well a little bird told me that you are going to have a shot-gun wedding. E.Grapevine: 就是grape(葡萄)+ vine(藤蔓)=八卦來源。 1.I heard through the grapevine that Jay just divorced his wife. 2.I heard through the grapevine that Dan cheated on Carrie. 1.private(a.) 隱私權→Show some respect for my privacy.請尊重我的隱私權 pirate(n.) 填塞.A到B→stuffy(a.)很悶(沒有空氣對流的情況)→stuffing(n.) This is our company's stuff. A.Don't touch my stuff. B.Please don't use my computer without my permission. (禮貌且正式) C.This phone is private not for public use. A.Please knock on the door before entering my room. B.Knock it off.=cut it out!你不要再鬧了喔!=Don't mess with me. C.This is a knockout.這是贗品(山寨版) D.I knocked over the mug filled with coffee. E.Knock! Knock! 如果到了冰淇淋店的話,我要兩球香草口味的,可別說成two balls of vanilla,而是two scoops of vanilla才對喔!

《Culture》Tsua-Bing Vs. Snow Cones
Now that the weather is getting warmer, it is time for a Taiwanese favorite: tsua-bing. In the United States, Americans also eat a shaved-ice-treat to cool off; it is called the snow cone. Tsua-bing and snow cones are similar because they both use ice as the main ingredient. However, both treats are prepared differently, and represent their place of origin. The tsua-bing is served with fresh ingredients, such as seasonal fruit (mango, watermelon and strawberries) and most commonly: taro, red bean, mung beans, yams, sweetened peanuts, almond junket, and grass jelly. Syrup and condensed milk can be added, but that is up to the customer. The chunks of ice can also be thick if they are crushed by hand or fine if they are crushed by a machine. Tsua-bing is often a group desert that is served in massive quantities on a plate and can feed two to four people depending on the size. Snow cones get their sweetness and color from flavored syrup. Popular summertime flavors include: tootie fruity (a flavor that tastes like bubble gum), root beer, blue raspberry and grape. There is even a rainbow flavor that combines three flavors together: cherry, lemon, and apple. Sometimes, condensed milk is added to snow cones to make them taste similar to ice cream. The condensed milk makes the already sweet food, even sweeter. Unlike tsua-bing, snow cones are not usually served with fruit, peanuts, or beans. The way that the dessert is served is also different. Snow cones are circular in shape, like a ball and served in a paper cone instead of on a large serving dish. So, whether you are scooping a mound of tsua-bing into your mouth or enjoying the icy sweetness of a rainbow snow cone, know that shaved ice is a favorite way to cool off for both Taiwan and the USA.

《Teaching》Creativity is Important in Education
Rote memorization is a necessary form of instruction. There is some content that should remain at the forefront of a student's mind in order to tackle more complex subjects. For example, memorizing phonetic sounds or character meaning is essential to language and reading skills. Furthermore, students must commit multiplication tables to memory before studying geometry or calculus. Memorization will help a student achieve high marks, however, it requires creativity and critical thinking to apply that knowledge in a real-world setting. Creativity and critical thinking skills are necessary to understand and apply abstract ideas and content. Educators believe that, along with memorization, fostering creativity and cultivating critical thinking skills are crucial for curriculums. We must teach students how to think, rather than simply what to think. It is my understanding that some schools in Kinmen County made an effort to increase critical thinking requirements in the curriculum; however, the campaign lost momentum due to unverifiable results. Unfortunately, the growth of creativity and critical thinking skills is not measurable over short amounts of time, nor with the standard multiple-choice exams many schools currently administer. This does not diminish the importance of these skills. Although there are a many ways to measure creativity and critical thinking skills, none are easy, and most require diligent time and attention by instructors. Creativity can be assessed through assignments that require a finished product like a short story, or a musical composition. Critical thinking skills are visible in project-based learning assignments that require students to discover or solve real-world problems. The most important way to introduce creativity and critical thinking into your classroom is to reward originality. Students can be praised for considering alternative solutions to the same problem. As a secondary science teacher in the state of Alabama, I taught students to think with a skeptical mind, and to be critical of all outcomes until they could verify the results for themselves. If public education does not equip students with the knowledge and tools necessary to solve real-world issues, then we are selling our children short, despite our efforts. Consequently, when designing education curriculum, the important thing is to design material that will challenge the students to think differently rather than merely to produce the correct answer.

《Teaching》The First Five Years
"The principle goal of education in schools should be creating men and women who are capable of doing new things, not simply repeating what other generations have done. -Jean Piaget, Swiss developmental psychologist and philosopher Education is important. Early childhood education is even more important in developing a workforce. Around the world, much attention is now being paid to this period in a child's life. Many economists, educators, and journalists have researched and proven that the first five years in a child's life determines much of the rest of their life and educational potential. The American Ounce of Prevention Fund states that at-risk children who don't receive a high-quality early childhood education are: ‧70% more likely to be arrested for a violent crime ‧60% more likely to never attend college ‧50% more likely to be placed in special education ‧40% more likely to become a teen parent ‧25% more likely to drop out of school James Heckman received the Nobel Prize in Economics in 2000 for his work in developing human potential. His work proved that in creating productive citizens emphasizing the development of cognitive skills where knowledge can be tested is not optimal. Rather, the development of social skills must be combined with cognitive skills. Social skills include persistence, attentiveness, and working with others, and together these create a capable and productive work force. A key part of this understanding is that social skill development must take place early in a child's life. With investment in developing social and cognitive skills at an early age, returns on our investment are between 6-10%. These are realized through lower medical costs, lower crime rates, and higher workforce productivity. In a US federally funded program that tracked participants until they were 26, every dollar spent in Chicago parent-child centers generated $4-$11 in returns. The graph below clearly demonstrated the stronger impact of early investment. Clearly paying attention to the first five years of a child's life is very important; for their sake and our own.

(English Is A Piece of Cake)
吃藥(take the medicine);喝湯可不是drink the soup,而是eat the soup,因為歐美湯品中有許多蔬菜和湯料相佐,也算是一道菜(dish)喔。 X:He pushed my cup to the floor. O:He knocked over my cup. X:The hotel room is empty. O:The hotel room is vacant. X:Can you repeat again? O:Could you say that again?=Could you repeat it? X:Alice had an incident in the lab. She spilled some acid on her hands. O:Alice has an accident in the lab. She spilled some acid on her hands. X:We were stolen last summer when we went on vacation. O:We were robbed last summer when we went on vacation. 6.愛德華酷愛健身,而且他有【人魚線】耶!(超夯新聞吸睛單字) X:Edward is totally fanatic about toning up his muscles and he got mermaid line. O:Edward is totally fanatic about toning up his muscles and he got mermaid abs. ●biceps 二頭肌(bi=two, bicycle(n.)腳踏車) ●triceps 上臂三角肌(tri=three, trilingual(a.) 3.I can eat a horse.(俏皮的俚語表達:餓到都可以吃下一匹牛了。) 4.I want to grab a bite of something. Hard to tell. 2. Quit that thought. 3. You never know. 4. Just let it go. 5. Keep it down. 6. We are even. 7. Don't fool me. 8. Don't go overboard. 1.Brian is my science teacher_________ middle school.(Brian是我國中的自然老師。) (A) for (B) of (C) at (D) in 2.This is the key______ the door.(這是門的鑰匙。) (A) to (B) of (C) at (D) for 3.Please come up with a solution_______ the problem.(請想出這個問題的解決方案。) (A) about (B) of (C) to (D) in 4.Lisa is _____ business.(Lisa正在洽公中。) (A) for (B) on (C) at (D) during 5.My elder sister goes to school ______ foot every day.(我姐姐每天走路去學校。) (A) by (B) of (C) on (D) in 6.Caroline arrived _________ Friday morning.(Caroline周五早上抵達倫敦。) (A) for (B) in (C) at (D) on 7.John proposed to me last evening, but I am still uncertain about getting married_____ him. (A) for (B) to (C) at (D) with 8.In my leisure time, I'd like to sing ______ music.(在我空閒的時間,我喜歡跟著音樂歌唱。) (A) to (B) of (C) with (D) by 9.Henry is president _____ South America Airline(亨利是南美航空的總裁。) (A) to (B) of (C) with (D) by 10.This charity will provide the homeless ____ food supply and temporary shelters. (A) to (B) of (C) with (D) for 答案區:真相大白 1.C 2.A 3.C 4.B 5.C 6.D 7.B 8.A 9.B 10.C News! News! Here! No news is good news!<沒新聞就是好消息>這句話應該很耳熟吧! (A) I am dealing with some issues.(我正在處理一些事情:不便透露) (B) I have some family issues.(我家裡發生一些事情。) (A) The government issued the shopping voucher to all citizens.(政府發行消費券給人民。) (B) The bank offers credit card users more benefits by issuing them the VIP card in the airport loung room.

《Culture》Mother's Day
This year, people all over the world will recognize their mothers and significant women in their lives by celebrating Mother's Day. While Mother's Day is often thought of as a day for purchasing greeting cards, carnations, and boxes of chocolate, that was the opposite intention of its creator. Mother's Day in the United States has been a holiday for about 100 years, but holidays celebrating mothers have been around for much longer, and are held in nearly every country in the world. In America, the modern version of Mother's Day was first celebrated by Anna Jarvis in 1908. Following the death of her mother, Jarvis felt that Americans should spend more time honoring their mothers, particularly because society often overlooks the time and effort mothers put into raising children. For many years, she campaigned for support to make Mother's Day an official holiday. In 1914, she succeeded and President Woodrow Wilson declared that the second Sunday in May would be a national holiday celebrating mothers. The most common way to celebrate Mother's Day in the United States is to purchase flowers, often carnations, and greeting cards. A red carnation is often given to a mother who is still alive and a white carnation is often left as a memorial to a mother who is deceased. Children will hand-make cards in school to give to their mothers. Many people go to church services with their mothers on Mother's Day, as well. Often, people will then go out to eat at a restaurant. In Kinmen, people can do much the same thing to celebrate Mother's Day. You can buy flowers for your mother at the local flower shop, or perhaps buy a nice box of chocolate. Why not get creative and design your own card? And kids, why not show how hard you are working on your English by writing to your mother in English? Just simply write, "Happy Mother's Day!" and on the inside you can write all of the reasons why you love your mother. To all the wonderful mothers in Kinmen, Happy Mother's Day!

《English Learning》Three Hot English Idioms: Talking about Weather
The weather is changing in Kinmen. Winter is turning into spring. It's been raining a little more, and the days are getting warmer. Now is a great time to learn English idioms about weather. One of the most famous English weather idioms is, "It's raining cats and dogs." "To rain cats and dogs" means to rain very heavily But native English speakers don't use this phrase very often in everyday conversation. A much more common phrase is "It's pouring." "To pour" literally means to remove water from a container by turning it over (逐字翻譯:把盆裡的水倒掉). But "pour" also refers to heavy rain. An English speaker might say, "Don't forget your umbrella! It's pouring outside." The word "rain" is sometimes included in the sentence, but it's not necessary. For example, you might say, "I don't want to walk home. It's pouring rain." You may also say, "I don't want to walk home. It's pouring." The two sentences mean the same thing-that it's raining very heavily. When the weather is getting hotter, a common English idiom is "the mercury is rising." This phrase refers to the mercury (水銀、汞) in thermometers (溫度計). When the temperature rises, the mercury in the thermometer also rises. So if someone says the mercury is rising, this means the temperature is rising. "The mercury is rising" isn't common in everyday conversation, but it's very common in weather reports on the TV news. A weather reporter may say, "Make sure your air conditioning is working, folks. The mercury is rising outside." With the weather changing, you might catch a cold. If you're feeling a little bit sick or tired, you can say that you're feeling "under the weather" (有點不舒服). This phrase doesn't refer to the weather itself. Instead, it refers to a person's health. For example, "Katie hasn't been at work recently. She's been feeling a little under the weather." With the weather changing and the mercury rising, I hope that these phrases are useful to those learning English and that you don't fell under the weather.

《Culture》Memorial Day
The month of May has numerous important holidays, such as Mother's Day, National Teachers Day, and Cinco de Mayo. One holiday in particular, Memorial Day, is of great importance to Americans. Always the last Monday in May, Memorial Day is a holiday during which Americans remember the hundreds of thousands of brave men and women who died fighting for their country. The most deadly American war was the Civil War from 1861 to 1865, in which roughly 700,000 Americans perished. Americans perform a variety of activities on Memorial Day. If families or individuals have personally known someone killed in battle, often they will visit the grave of their loved one. For instance, many visit the famous Arlington National Cemetery near Washington, D.C where nearly a half of a million fallen soldiers are buried. Individuals typically leave flowers on the grave and bring other items, such as family photos, that have significance to the deceased individual. Memorial Day, in this sense, is somewhat similar to the Taiwanese holiday of Tomb-Sweeping Day (清明節) in that friends and family members visit gravesites and pay their respects. While Memorial Day provides an opportunity for individuals to honor the fallen members of America's armed forces, it also is a time to celebrate the beginning of summer. Due to the more comfortable weather, many individuals spend more time outdoors. The most popular outdoor event is a barbecue. Barbecues are held in public spaces, such as a park, as well as in more private venues, including homes or apartments. Typically, however, the house or apartment will have either a backyard or a rooftop so that all individuals are able to cherish the warmer weather outside. Memorial Day is, therefore, not only a day of remembrance, but also an opportunity to interact with family members and friends in the great outdoors.

《Culture》Arbor Day
On April 26th, Americans celebrate the national holiday of Arbor Day. Arbor Day is held on the last Friday of April and celebrates the importance of trees. Traditionally, Americans plant trees during this holiday. Some people like to plant trees in their backyard, cities plant trees in local parks, and even schools plant trees in their schoolyards. One of my fondest memories as a child was celebrating Arbor Day with my elementary school classmates and teachers. That day, we got out our shovels and we planted several trees in our schoolyard. Over the years, I observed how the trees matured and grew taller, like me. As a native of downtown Chicago, I did not often get to go to the woods and enter into nature. Events held to celebrate the environment like Arbor Day formed my appreciation of trees and my passion for the environment. In a materialistic world, it is easy to forget the value of trees and nature. Scientifically, trees are important because they absorb carbon dioxide and produce oxygen. The absorption of carbon dioxide is crucial in improving the environment and slowing global warming. As humans burn more fossil fuels, such as oil and coal, more carbon dioxide is released into the environment and the planet warms up. Trees help counteract this global trend by taking carbon dioxide out of the environment. Trees not only absorb moisture during the rainy seasons but their root structure also helps keep soil in a fixed location. For that reason, trees are very good at preventing landslides and erosion-something that is particularly important in Taiwan. Although Kinmen is fortunate to have a variety of trees and wildlife, I urge you to plant a tree on Arbor Day. While you may think planting just one tree is insignificant, consider the effect of many people each planting a tree. On the first Arbor Day ever, for instance, approximately one million trees were planted! Therefore, we should all plant trees in an effort to beautify our surroundings and create a safer, greener environment.

《Culture》Earth Day
Celebrate Earth day this year on April 22nd! Earth Day is a day when individuals reevaluate their consumption of the earth's natural resources, and decide to make small, daily changes that will help protect the planet. A few terms or mottos that you could hear and see on this day might be, fossil fuel, Reduce Reuse and Recycle, and compost. Fossil fuels are Earth's natural energy supply, including coal, gas, and oil. Reduce Reuse and Recycle encourages people to conserve energy, water, and fossil fuels, and to reuse manmade materials to cut down on pollution. Composting means taking the contents of your dinner's leftovers and using them to fertilize soil. Even using coffee grounds and banana peels can help your plants grow big and strong. Earth day is important, because it promotes the protection of the Earth's precious resources. How can individuals, companies, and countries help protect the Earth and its resources so that future generations can enjoy its beauty? The process starts with individuals like you. For instance, you could make good, clean choices regarding natural gas, energy, and water consumption. You are not powerless. Every change a person makes helps their home and community. A short list could include, fixing all the leaking faucets (sinks, showers) in your house. You could limit your consumption of red meat (cows are the biggest producers of green houses gases). You could also buy your groceries locally because the less time you spend in your car or on your scooter the less air pollution your vehicle produces. Another easy option is to turn off lights you are not using when you leave a room. You could take more public transportation as opposed to driving your car or scooter. Or, you could ride your bike or walk to your desired location. Taiwan already has a fantastic recycling and trash system. Taiwan's trash collection and recycling system needs to be duplicated and used by countries worldwide. So go out there, make a difference in your communities and environment!

《Culture》Tornadoes
I grew up amongst the rolling hills of western Kentucky; the region is commonly known as Tornado Alley. A tornado is a violent rotating, closed column of low-pressure air which often accompanies stormy weather. A tornado stretches from the ground to the clouds above and can travel at 483 km/h leaving a path of destruction behind it. Tornado Alley is a region located in the United States between the Rocky Mountains of the West, and the Appalachia Mountains of the East. Warm air comes from the Gulf of Mexico and clashes with cooler dry air that creeps down from the Northern polar region. The cool dry air and the warm moist air meet and clash directly in the central United States causing a season of beautiful but destructive weather. Many times during my childhood, tornados threatened my community. Many houses through the Midwest come equipped with storm cellars. Storm cellars are like basements except they are for storage and protection. My house did not have a cellar, so my family would pack a flashlight and radio and go to our neighbor's cellar. We always brought flashlights so if we lost electricity we could still see. We brought a radio so we could listen to the news to hear exactly where the tornado was traveling. Before coming to Kinmen, I was a teacher in rural, Western Alabama. This particular area of Alabama is historically poor, so the houses are manufactured cheaply, and overall less safe. My house in Alabama, for example, was new but was constructed completely from recycled materials. On two occasions a tornado came so close to my house that it shook so violently that I crawled into the bathtub for safety. In late April 2011, 358 tornadoes touched down in Alabama and the southern United States - the largest concentration of tornadoes in the country's history. During my two years of service, many of my students lost their homes and family members to destructive tornadoes. Tornados are a disastrous and extreme form of weather. Where I'm from in the Tornado Alley, they come about in the springtime, which is the most beautiful time of year. It is amazing that in such a wonderful and pleasant time of the year, there can

《Behind the News》Pope Francis
On March 13, Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Argentina was elected pope of the Roman Catholic Church. Bergoglio's election came after the resignation of the previous pope, Benedict XVI earlier in February. The pope is the Bishop of Rome and is the leader of the world's 1.2 billion Catholics. After he was elected, Bergolio chose to be called by the name Francis in honor of St. Francis of Assisi and St. Francis Xavier. Francis of Assisi was an Italian saint who worked with the poor. Xavier was an original member of the Jesuits, the religious order to which Pope Francis belongs. Pope Francis' election is significant because he is the first non-European pope in nearly 1,300 years. He is also the first pope from the Americas and the first Jesuit pope. Pope Francis was born in Argentina in 1936 to parents who came from Northern Italy. In his youth, he suffered from a serious episode of pneumonia, a lung condition that makes it difficult to breath. Later, he studied chemistry intensely for four years at the University of Buenos Aires. When he was 32, Pope Francis was ordained a priest. As the bishop of Buenos Aires, Pope Francis was known as an advocate for social justice and human rights. He actively spoke about the large gaps between rich and poor in Argentinean society. Pope Francis was also known for upholding the Church's position on controversial issues including, homosexuality, contraception, abortion, and female ordination. Pope Francis has a strong relationship with other faith communities. In a recent press conference, he offered a blessing to all members of the press that were present regardless of their religious beliefs. The new pope's inauguration is significant for Taiwan because President Ma was invited to attend the services in Rome. It is the first time in history that an ROC Head of State met with the pope. As Msgr. Paul Russell, the Papal Representative to Taiwan, said, “This event is full of significance and is a concrete sign of our official friendship.” Russell continued by saying that this trip is a personal journey for President Ma as well, “It is something that has been in his heart for a long time. I am sure that this trip will bring divine blessings to President Ma and his wife, and also to all the people of Taiwan.”

《Culture》April Fools' Day
Every year on April 1, April Fools' Day, many people in the United States, Canada, Australia, and Europe celebrate. April Fools' Day is not an official holiday in any country, but it is a day when many people play tricks or pranks on each other. The origins of April Fools' Day are unclear, but an earlier version of the holiday likely started during the Roman Empire. There was also a similar holiday celebrated in Medieval Europe, and April Fools' Day probably has multiple origins. Many cultures in the West have had holidays that involve playing tricks on people. Some April Fools' Day tricks are very elaborate, but most are quite simple. One popular trick is gluing a coin to the floor of a public place. When people walk past the coin, they try to pick it up, but it is stuck to the ground. On April Fools' Day, some newspapers, magazines, and blogs print fake articles. The next day they reveal that the article was actually fake. Food-related tricks are very common on April Fools' Day. One trick is to fill a sugar bowl with salt. When a person tries to put sugar in their coffee or tea, they put in salt. Another popular trick is to hard boil all the eggs, and then put them back in the refrigerator. Once, a friend of mine offered me an Oreo cookie on April Fools' Day. I was surprised and disappointed when I tasted toothpaste instead of white cream filling. More elaborate April Fools' Day pranks include filling a person's room or office with balloons, or wrapping a person's car in plastic wrap. One will have to pop all the balloons before entering the room, or unwrap the car before opening it. On April Fools’ Day, friends and family, and occasionally co-workers, play fun, good-natured practical jokes on each other. As long as the pranks aren't mean or dangerous, nobody minds too much.

《Culture》So Many Shoes
I never thought I would be so worried about shoes. I stayed at my host father's parents' home in Miaoli (苗栗) for four days to celebrate Chinese New Year. Although I learned a lot about New Year traditions, the most surprising experience I had was trying to figure out what to wear on my feet each day. The home where I stayed has four floors. On the ground floor, you wear sandals. On the upper floors, you wear blue slippers. In the bathroom, you wear red slippers. This is not unusual in Taiwan, but, for an American, all those shoes can cause confusion. You see, at home, we don't even wear shoes in the house. When you enter my home, you take off your shoes and wear your socks or—in the summertime—your bare feet. Once, while visiting Miaoli, I forgot to put on my sandals when I went downstairs to the kitchen. “Where are your shoes?” my host mom asked. “This floor is so dirty.” This was the third time I had worn the wrong thing on my feet, so I finally explained to her that this custom of changing shoes was hard for me to get used to, since we wear socks inside. “But don't you have to clean the floors a lot in America?” she asked. “Not more than usual,” I replied. Our socks aren't dirty because we wear shoes outside, and many people have carpet in their homes, so the dirt doesn't stick to your feet. “Don’t your feet get cold?” she asked. “Where I live, it's so cold that our homes are heated,” I said. Sometimes I wear slippers if my feet get cold, but wearing slippers is not a rule like it is here. At first, I had a hard time understanding why it mattered so much if I was wearing my upstairs shoes downstairs or my socks in the kitchen. But I realized that it wasn’t the shoes that the family really cared about. It was my comfort as a guest. More than anything in Taiwan, I have noticed how well Taiwanese people treat their guests. It makes me feel right at home, and I guess I will wear whatever shoes I need to wear to show my appreciation.

《Culture》March Madness
March Madness is here! This March, college basketball fans around the world will tune in to watch the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament. The tournament consists of the top 68 college basketball teams in the United States. The teams are grouped into one of four regions of the U.S. and are ranked from 1st to 16th. The best team plays the 16th ranked team, the 2nd best team plays the 15th best team, and so on. If a team wins, they advance to the next round of competition. If a team loses, however, they are eliminated from the tournament and no longer have an opportunity to win the national championship. The tournament is referred to as March Madness because of this single-elimination rule. If a team wants to continue playing in the tournament, they must win each game. There are no second chances in March Madness. After a team wins two games in a row, they are in what is called the“Sweet Sixteen,”which is the final sixteen teams remaining in the tournament. If they win again, they advanced to the “Elite Eight”and subsequently to the“Final Four.” Oftentimes, an underrated team defeats a higher-ranked team. The lower-ranked team advances in the tournament, and the higher ranked team is sent home. This is called an“upset.”The NCAA tournament is famous for numerous upsets every year. For instance, despite being ranked only 11th in 2011, Virginia Commonwealth University advanced all the way to the Final Four, defeating famous teams such as Kansas and Georgetown University. In addition to watching the games on the television, most Americans fill out a tournament bracket. While completing a bracket, individuals must predict the winners of all 63 games in the tournament. Many sports websites allow you to fill out a bracket and enter a contest to win cash prizes. If you are interested in learning more about March Madness and perhaps even winning some money, I encourage you to search March Madness online and fill out a bracket. The tournament begins on March 19th. Get ready!

《Culture》Happy Saint Patrick's Day
March 17 is Saint Patrick's Day, and on that day, many people around the world will be celebrating Irish culture and the life of Saint Patrick. Saint Patrick's Day is an official holiday in Ireland, Northern Ireland, and the Canadian province of Newfoundland. Many people in the United States, Australia, New Zealand, and other countries also celebrate Saint Patrick's Day. The Catholic Church particularly honors Saint Patrick for bringing Christianity to Ireland. Saint Patrick was born in the year 385 and died in 461. Saint Patrick's Day takes place on the anniversary of his death, and the holiday has been celebrated for over 1,000 years. Saint Patrick's Day is also a holiday in several other Christian churches. Saint Patrick's Day was first celebrated in Ireland, but today it is celebrated all over the world, wherever Irish people live. Today, it is not only a Catholic holiday, but also a day to celebrate Irish culture. In the United States, Saint Patrick's Day is celebrated much more generally by many people. Not only do Catholics and Irish people celebrate this holiday, but non-Catholics and other Americans also join in the fun, too. On Saint Patrick's Day, people traditionally wear green, which represents Ireland and Irish culture. Many people also celebrate by going to Saint Patrick's Day parties. Some Catholic families attend church. In my family, we celebrate Saint Patrick's Day by eating a traditional Irish-American meal of corned beef, potatoes, and cabbage. Saint Patrick's Day is particularly important in my family, not only because we are Irish, but also because my parents first met on Saint Patrick's Day. Many cities hold Saint Patrick's Day parades and Irish-themed festivals. The largest celebration in the United States is in Boston, which has a large Irish-American population. The city of Chicago is famous for dyeing the Chicago River bright green on Saint Patrick's Day. Though Saint Patrick's Day was originally a holiday celebrated only by Irish people and Catholics, the holiday has become very popular around the world. And as the saying goes, “Everyone is Irish on Saint Patrick's Day.”

《Teaching》CreatingaLessonPlan
The Kinmen ETAs (English Teaching Assistants) are back and ready to teach a second semester at the Kinhu English Theme Learning Center, the KETLC. The stations or simulated classrooms are the Beach, the Hotel, the Kitchen, the Airplane, Customs and Duty Free, and the Transportation Station. This semester the teachers have changed the lesson plans to accommodate fifth grade levels of English. What are some of the differences that schools will see this semester? All of the new lessons have been adjusted to meet the needs of Kinmen's fifth graders. This means there are fewer vocabulary words and sentence patterns. Creating a lesson plan is a lengthy process. Successful lessons require three parts: goals and objectives, varied activities, and a time limit for each of the station's activities. All of the stations in EV have been successful because the teachers have decided what their station's specific goals and objectives were. Goals and objectives guide a lesson. An example of a lesson goal would be for students to learn how to order a meal in English. Once a lesson's goals and objectives are determined it is easier for teachers to create accessible and focused activities. Balancing activities is crucial in keeping students engaged, and keeps management problems to a minimum. A balanced lesson includes activities that allow students to practice their conversation, writing, and listening skills. Activities make lessons fun for students. If a station consists of only one type of activity, students have difficulty focusing because they are bored. Activities that allowed students to move around the classroom while using the station's vocabulary and sentences were very successful last semester. Creating accurate time limits is the most difficult part when designing lesson plans. Within a lesson plan teachers must estimate how long an activity will take, but it is hard to determine the perfect amount of time until they practice with actual students. All the teachers at the KETLC have learned this point well and we are excited to welcome Kinmen's fifth graders this semester to the KETLC to experience our brand new lessons.

(English is a piece of cake)
◆Welcome back! (B)laid-off (a.):off有關閉和遠離的解釋,老闆讓你滾去喝西北風,那可就慘了! 同義的表達還有: 1.get fired (如果說fire away就是叫對方有事快說,不要拐彎抹角beat around the bush) 2.get axed (axe斧頭) 3.get sacked(英式用語,英檢聽力常考句) 4.be given a boot(叫你穿好鞋離開) 5.be given a pink slip(在國外的解聘通知信都是粉紅色的!) I want to quit. It's time to resign.(re-:再一次, sign簽名,同學可以想像你進公司簽合約離開簽退的情景。) 3. I am looking for a position with greater challenges. If all the year were playing holidays, to sport would be as tedious as to work. 除了很表面的說:glad(快樂的), upset(失望的), furious(生氣的),confused(困惑的)我們還可以怎樣在英文句子裡表達情感呢? EX.:When Joseph told me he's going to marry me, I raised my eyebrows and dropped my jaw. EX.:Alice's mother angrily asked her why she spent so much money on the phone bill, and only thing she could do was shrug her shoulder. EX.:I couldn't help but widen my mouth when the owl turned its head for 360 degrees. I am like a deer in front of the headlight.(像是在車燈前面的鹿)是不是很貼切阿! D.pout your lips EX.:Lisa pouted her lips in front of the movie theater after waiting for her boyfriend for two hours. Santa Claus is coming to town”你一定沒忘記吧! 『Oh! You'd better watch out, you'd better not cry,(噢! You'd better not pout, I'm telling you why,(也千萬不要嘟著小嘴巴喔!我來告訴你為什麼) Santa Claus is coming to town.(因為聖誕老公公要進城了。)』 Don't do the eye-rolling!! 還冷笑地跟其他女孩擁抱著說:「You are breaking my back. 【You should learn from this competition. Don't just laugh and make yourself look like a victim. We are all rooting for you. How dare you! Do you know how little the chance is to win this competition? I am so disappointed in you. You are not the victim and you should take responsibility for yourself.】 I don't buy it.(要是遇到銷售員這可就夠諷刺的,我不買你的產品,即是我不相信你的話!)。 I am done believing you. EX.:During the United Nation Summit Conference with all heads from developed countries, the security guards on port were all alert, scanned the venue in all directions as well as stood with their arms folded. Take a good look at me now. Cause I'll still be standing here. And you coming back to me is against all odds. That's the chance I've got to take. I am at odds with sb.(我跟某人不合拍。) 其實中文常說的含著金湯匙出生,在英文的用法是:be born with a silver spoon而不是金湯匙gold spoon喔! All that glitters is not always gold.(不是每個閃閃發亮的東西都是黃金。)

《Teaching》From Jinsha to Jamaica
Under the shade of tree, a skinny Jamaican girl with hair braids wears a green skirt. She stood with a chalkboard in her hands and introduced herself. "Hi, my name is Tineka Dixon," she said. "I am nine years old, and I attend the Sommerset Primary School. I have two brothers and three sisters. I like to study. Bye." Those simple words began a friendship between my students at Jinsha Elementary, and students halfway around the world in a small country called Jamaica. This year, my college friend, Lindsay Papsin, is teaching in Jamaica. We thought it would be great if our students could get to know one another. The girls at Jinsha were the first to respond. Julia He, a fifth grade student at Jinsha, recorded an introduction of herself and we sent it to Jamaica. For both my students in Kinmen and Lindsay's students in Jamaica, it is the first time many have ever communicated with a peer of another nationality or race, especially on the other side of the globe. I hope that several of my students will consider study abroad opportunities for high school like Rotary International, or that they will seek out similar opportunities in college. Many of the students got involved more easily using videos because they are more hesitant about reading and writing than about speaking English. Later, students began to write letters using a very basic sentence structure. I asked students to fill in the blanks and finally to decorate the letters. In some cases though, the students wrote their own original sentences! I hope to pair students up individually this semester so that we can create lasting friendships. I will also involve a local teacher in the project so it will continue after I leave Kinmen. With persistence, Lindsay and I believe we can create lasting relationships between our students that will enhance their English language abilities and broaden their perspectives.

《Culture》Easter Sunday
Easter is a Christian holiday that celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ after his death by crucifixion, being nailed to a cross, almost 2000 years ago. According to the Bible, the Christian holy book, Jesus was arrested for crimes that threatened local religious and governmental control. He was tried and killed by the Roman governor of Palestine, Pontius Pilate, on a Friday, placed inside a tomb, and the tomb was sealed with a large rock. Three days later, friends of Jesus returned to the tomb to mourn his death and found the rock moved and the body missing. It is believed by Christians that Jesus resurrected, or brought himself back to life, three days after he died. It was this amazing event and the teaching of Jesus that inspired the earliest Christians to form groups, begin teaching and spreading their beliefs. Over two thousand years, this evolved into the religion of Christianity we are familiar with today. For modern Christians, Easter is a holiday that is celebrated by worshipping at a church service or eating a meal with family and friends. Christians often wear their nicest clothing, or Sunday best, for Easter. Young girls will commonly wear white dresses and boys will wear shirts and ties to church. A common symbol of Easter is the Easter bunny, a furry rabbit that most often carries a basket full of eggs, which represents fertility and life. The symbols of a rabbit and eggs have remained from ancient pre-Christian holidays that celebrated springtime. Many children enjoy decorating hard-boiled eggs with colors and patterns. These are called Easter eggs. For the nearly 80 percent of Americans and many Western Europeans who are Christian, Christmas on December 25, which celebrates Jesus' birth, is an even more important holiday. But for Eastern Orthodox Christians who generally live in Eastern Europe, Easter is the most important holiday of the year because it symbolizes the Christian belief in the afterlife, or life in heaven after physical death on earth.

《Culture》Celebrating Valentine's Day
Valentine's Day is celebrated every year on the 14th of February. Originally, Valentine's Day celebrated St. Valentine. Around the years 279 AD, he performed Christian marriages for Roman soldiers against the law, was put in prison, and was beheaded for his beliefs. However, since around year 1400 AD, Valentine's Day has been a holiday mostly about sharing and showing love. Today's celebrations of Valentine's Day are about romance, love, and friendship. On February 14th , it's not unusual to find couples out on dates at a variety of romantic spots. For example, taking your sweetheart out to dinner is traditional, but sometimes a homemade, man-made dinner is even more romantic. Additionally, gifts are often exchanged. Normally a greeting card is given, made by hand or bought at the store and with a message of love. Single people or people in relationships send and give each other cards. Single people sometimes send cards with "Will you be my Valentine?" written inside. Being someone's Valentine means you might go on a date, exchange a gift, or perhaps share a kiss. Many kids in school make Valentine's Day cards for each other on February 14th Cards normally are shaped like hearts or have hearts on them, and can be made out of pink and red paper. These children's cards are expressions of friendship. The simplest type of Valentine is made by folding a piece of paper in half and cutting out half of a heart shape. Then, when it is unfolded, it makes a whole heart shape. Inside the heart, people can write a message for their Valentine. Normal gifts include flowers or candy, especially roses and chocolates. Sometimes gifts can even be activities, like going to a movie or even a trip! It can be so romantic that some people choose to propose marriage on Valentine's Day! All this gift giving means that Valentine's Day is big business for restaurants, jewelry stores, candy shops, flower shops, and places that sell cards. Sometimes thinking of something to give your Valentine can be very hard. So, like many holidays, the days before February 14th can be stressful. Celebrating Valentine's Day is a great way to show someone special to you that you care, or to do something romantic with someone you love. Although often accompanied by a card, candy, or flowers, Valentine's Day's most important feature is sharing love and friendship between two people.

《Culture》Celebrating African American History
In the United States, the month of February is Black History Month, which celebrates African American history. During Black History Month, people try to remember the countless contributions that African Americans have made. Remembrance takes place at schools, at museums, at libraries, in the media, and elsewhere. In schools, teachers may spend extra time focusing on literature written by African Americans or on historical events in which African Americans played an important role. Museums might highlight exhibits related to African American history, and libraries may feature books written by African American authors.Television channels might also play movies or documentaries about African American history. Black History Month was first recognized by the U.S. government in 1976, but the event's history is much longer. Initially, Black History Month was Black History Week. It began in 1926, when the African American, Harvard-educated historian, Carter G. Woodson, first announced the holiday. His goal was to educate the American people about the important contributions that African Americans have made throughout history. After the first celebration in February 1926, African Americans and European Americans both began to spend more time teaching and talking about African American history. The holiday was an important cultural event long before it was recognized by the government fifty years later. When the event began in the 1920s, African American history was given almost no attention in schools or by the media. Dedicating a period of time to the study of African American history was meant to fix this problem. In fact, African American history is completely inseparable from the rest of American history, not just a subject for February. If it weren't for African Americans, the United States today would be a different country. Almost every aspect of American culture has been influenced by African American culture: everything from music to food, from fashion to American English. American culture is not the only thing influenced by African Americans. African American scientists, politicians, teachers, workers, and soldiers have also had a huge impact on the economy of the United States and its place on the world stage. Because of the great importance of African American history in American history, it is unfortunate that Americans still must dedicate a month every year to the study of that history. Eventually, African American history should be studied throughout the year, without the need for a reminder.

《Teaching》5th Graders to Come to the KETLC
When the Spring Festival holidays are completed, Kinmen students will return to the classroom and continue their education. The Kinhu English Theme Learning Center, the KETLC, at Kinhu Elementary School, will continue to allow students to have new experiences and greater opportunities to use English to their fullest. New this semester, the KETLC will welcome 5th grade classes from all over Kinmen to come and experience two full days of English speaking, listening, and reading. During the fall semester, every 6th grade class in Kinmen came for two days to the KETLC and was able to experience three of the six themed classrooms which include, the Kitchen, the Airplane, Customs & Duty Free, the Restaurant/Hotel, the Beach, and the Transportation Station. 6th graders returned to their schools with stories of the fun activities at the KETLC like surfing and tanning, or the new food they tried, like the peanut butter & jelly sandwich. Now, it is time for the 5th graders to have their turn. Laticia Lee, the director of the KETLC, said that it is important for 5th graders to come to the KETLC because the variety of classrooms will excite them and hopefully inspire a lifetime interest in English. At KETLC students apply their English in simulated real life situations with native speakers. Mrs. Lee hopes that when 5th graders come back for their 6th grade year and come to KETLC, they will realize the great improvements they have made. While the grade level of the students changes this spring, the primary goals of the KETLC remain the same. Students practice vocabulary they have already studied in schools, students learn new vocabulary and phrases for excelling in real life situations, and students can be excited and inspired to study English in the future. The KETLC teachers are actively planning new lessons for the classrooms in order to make the lessons more appropriate for the 5th grade level. For instance, 5th grade students have not yet studied much of the vocabulary used in the classrooms, vehicles like car or bus or numbers greater than fifty. Designing lesson plans for the different classrooms is proving challenging for teachers. Teachers first need to find out what the students know. Then they must overcome what students don't know, without overwhelming them with too many new vocabulary words. In order to maximize the benefit to students, it is helpful for English classes in Kinmen schools to preview the KETLC vocabulary and phrases before coming to the KETLC. The material is found on the school department's website http://esd.km.edu.tw/etrc/Index.aspx. On the website, teachers and students can download the lessons and vocabulary lists for this semester as well as other free English learning material. Teachers should encourage students to be brave when coming to the KETLC. Using English is not a one-time event, but rather a lifetime adventure.

《Culture》My First Semester in Kaohsiung
Recently at night, I circled Kaohsiung's Cultural Center in jeans and a cotton T-shirt, enjoying the warm harbor air and wondering how Christmas arrived so soon. In Michigan, I was used to seeing signs of the holidays: knee-high mounds of snow, road salt to melt the ice, and snow on the streets. People in Kaohsiung would find these unusual. Here in southern Taiwan, my third graders trudge to English class in down parkas, clearly surprised that their foreign teacher still wears shorts. “Teacher Ryan,” one brave, pudgy little boy pokes my side, “你不會冷嗎?” I can only smile and shake my head, “No, I'm not cold.” With only early nightfall to remind me of winter, Kaohsiung's mild weather often makes me forget that my teaching is almost half over. As the calendar switches to 2013, I feel that I should think deeply about my first semester with elementary school students in this beautiful city. I don't doubt that most people, on their best days, want to leave an imprint on the world through how they treat other people. Yet measuring that impact is much more difficult, and the hardest thing of all is actually leaving an imprint. I hope that I am. One thing I've learned in my short time as an English language teacher and Chinese student is that each day gives only the smallest insight about our progress. One morning I struggle, out of nervousness, simply to greet my school principal. Then I spend the next afternoon chatting with my Taiwanese coworkers for a half hour over steamed dumplings. That night, I am tongue-tied and confused by a grocery clerk's simple question at the store. I frequently see my students do the same thing. One morning, Zach tells me “he is great” when I ask him, and the next morning he uncertainly repeats the question back to me:“How are you?” One afternoon, little Tina greets me enthusiastically in the hall: “Hi, Teacher Jenny!”(my co-teacher’s name). Later after school, a hushed conversation with little Penny (with a few whispered words of Mandarin), allows us to share how much we both like Kaohsiung's art museum and Disneyland. Most of my students are not the same kids I met in September. Alma no longer looks (or rather runs) away when she sees me. Instead, she scampers up to me with her short little legs and jabbers a sentence or two of English we've just learned, before returning to Chinese. Mario no longer flashes a stubborn, uncomfortable smile to decline practicing sentences in class, at least not as often as he used to. And then there's Jimmy. Quiet for a third grader, his English is average. When he notices me looking at him in class, he smiles back hesitantly, as though afraid of getting in trouble. Last week, I hurried past his classroom on my way to another lesson, stopping only to wave quickly through the window. He waved back. Then I heard, “I love you.” in English. The bell rang then, but I stopped. I hadn't taught him that. I glanced at the window, but he was gone. Did I hear wrong? Suddenly a small blur in a blue uniform collided with me, and I felt short arms wrap around my middle. A second later he disappeared. Maybe I shouldn't need these quiet moments of affirmation. Until hearing the words, I didn't realize how much I needed them. These words warm my heart on nightly walks through Kaohsiung's snowless December streets. Between steps, I shake my head and smile to myself: “No, I'm not cold. And that's okay.”

《Culture》The Most Famous Groundhog of All
By legend, on February 2nd in the United States a groundhog, an animal who is cousin to both the beaver and the squirrel, decides whether there will be six more weeks of winter or an early spring. Groundhog Day in parts of America is a small, nonreligious holiday brought over by European immigrants in the 18th century. The holiday combines several pagan festivals where animals were celebrated as indicators of the next season. Today, the biggest Groundhog Day's celebration occurs in central Pennsylvania in a small coal mining town called, Punxsutawney. On February 2nd, just as the sun rises, Punxsutawney Phil, America's most famous groundhog, awakes from his hibernation and bravely steps out of his hole. According to traditional folklore, if it is a cloudy day and Phil cannot see his shadow it means that it will be an early spring. However, if it is sunny when Phil steps out and he sees his shadow, there will be six more weeks of winter. If Phil does or does not see his shadow it doesn't matter on one level. The town always celebrates. Starting before sunrise, Punxsutawney residents and Groundhog Day enthusiasts from around the United States listen to music, eat good food, and wait for Phil to come out of his hole. Due to the popularity of the holiday, and because groundhogs are found across North America (as far Northwest as Alaska, and as Southeast as Georgia), many towns and cities now have their own groundhogs to determine when spring will arrive. None, however, are as famous as Punxsutawney Phil.

《Culture》The Super Bowl
Although baseball is recognized as America's pastime (國粹), football (橄欖球) is America's most popular sport. American football originated more than 150 years ago and it is now played at the professional, college, and high school levels. There are 32 professional teams in the National Football League (NFL) and every team plays 16 games during the season. These football games are typically played on Sunday afternoons starting in September and ending in February. After the top 12 teams compete in the playoffs (季後賽) during January, the final two teams go head-to-head in the final championship game (冠軍賽), the Super Bowl (超級盃). More Americans watch the Super Bowl than any other TV show in the United States, and it is the second most popular television broadcast in the world. Typically, over 100 million people watch the Super Bowl! Because so many people watch the Super Bowl, companies pay large amounts of money to buy advertisements (廣告) during the game. Many companies will pay three to four million U.S. dollars for a 30 second commercial. Not only is the price of the commercials during the Super Bowl higher, but also the content (內容)of the commercials is different. Companies invest a lot of time and money producing their commercials because millions of people see them. Many companies bring in celebrities, such as David Beckham and Elton John, to be spokesmen for their products. Companies often make the commercials humorous (幽默的) or use sex appeal (性感) to draw the attention of the viewer. The commercials are so entertaining, in fact, that many people watch the Super Bowl simply to view the commercials. The day after the Super Bowl, people frequently talk about their favorite commercials, rather than the actual football game. The Super Bowl also features live entertainment during the halftime show. The halftime performance is always a “must-see” event. In a matter of minutes, the football field is transformed into a stage for world-renowned singers. The Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney, Madonna, and U2 have all performed at halftime. Whether people watch the Super Bowl for the athletic competition, the commercials, or just the halftime show, it will continue to attract millions of viewers for years to come.
